AB-730 vs AB-731: Which Exam First?

The short version

Take AB-730 if you use Microsoft 365 Copilot yourself and want to prove you use it well. Take AB-731 if you guide AI decisions for a team or company and need to judge value, choose Microsoft services and plan adoption. Both are beginner level, 45 minutes and proctored, so the choice is about your role, not difficulty. If you do both, AB-730 first is a natural order for hands-on users, and AB-731 first suits leaders. Facts were checked on Microsoft Learn on October 22, 2026.

Where they overlap

  • Generative AI basics. Both ask about risks such as fabricated answers and the need for human review, plus responsible AI and data protection.
  • Prompting. AB-730 asks you to write and manage prompts. AB-731 asks you to understand the impact and techniques of prompt engineering.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both expect you to know what it is. AB-731 compares versions and licenses; AB-730 uses its features.
  • Agents. AB-730 asks you to apply prebuilt agents and use Cowork. AB-731 mentions building, buying or extending, and Copilot Studio capabilities.

Where they differ

AB-730 is hands-on. It names features you click: Notebooks, Copilot Pages, Facilitator, real-time catch-up, Intelligent recap, scheduled prompts and Cowork’s plan, approval and results.

AB-731 is about decisions. It names ideas a leader weighs: cost drivers such as tokens and return on investment, grounding and retrieval-augmented generation, when machine learning adds value, an AI council, an adoption team, AI champions, license types and Foundry Tools subscription models. It includes Microsoft Foundry and tools such as Azure AI Search, which AB-730 does not cover.

Different failure modes. AB-730 candidates slip on feature details. AB-731 candidates slip on choosing the right service for a business need and on governance vocabulary.

How to choose

  1. Daily Copilot user, no team to lead: AB-730.
  2. Manager or sponsor of AI projects: AB-731.
  3. Both hands-on and leading: start with the one that matches your next conversation at work. Many people pick AB-730 first because hands-on use gives context for the strategy questions.
  4. Short on time: take the exam whose domains match the work you do now; the other can wait.
  5. No Copilot access at work: AB-731 needs less product usage, though knowing the licensing helps. AB-730 is harder to study without access.

Whichever you choose, check the date of your study material. AB-730’s English outline changed on October 20, 2026.

Taking both

The overlap in responsible AI and Copilot basics is real, so studying for one helps with the other. A reasonable approach is to study the first exam, take it, then spend only the gap time on the second: for AB-731 after AB-730, that means Foundry Tools, cost and licensing, and adoption planning; for AB-730 after AB-731, it means hands-on Copilot features and Cowork. The retake rules are the same for both, so a failed attempt in one does not affect the other.

Frequently asked questions

Is AB-731 harder than AB-730?

Both are beginner level with the same length. The content differs, so difficulty depends on whether you know product features or strategy better.

Do I need AB-730 before AB-731?

Microsoft lists no prerequisite for either exam.

Can I take both in the same week?

Nothing in Microsoft’s policy forbids it. Studying for both at once is a lot, so most people space them out.
