AB-730 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

Microsoft’s AB-730 pages do not describe a renewal step, and Microsoft states that fundamentals certifications do not expire. The AB-730 page labels the credential beginner level but does not use the word “fundamentals”, so check your own Microsoft Learn profile for an expiration date. If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours, then wait 14 days between later attempts, with a limit of five attempts in 12 months. Everything here was checked on Microsoft Learn on October 22, 2026.

Does the AB-730 credential expire?

Here is exactly what Microsoft publishes:

  • The renewal page says Microsoft’s associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually, and that “fundamentals certifications do not expire”.
  • The renewal FAQ repeats it: renewal does not apply to fundamentals certifications because they do not expire.
  • The AB-730 credential page, “Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional”, lists the level as Beginner. It shows no expiry date, no renewal requirement and no renewal assessment.

What Microsoft does not say on these pages is whether it files AB-730 under “fundamentals”. The 45-minute exam time matches the fundamentals row on Microsoft’s exam-experience page, but that is a match, not a statement. The safe approach is to open your Learn profile after you pass. If a credential has an expiration date, the profile shows it, and a Renew button appears when you become eligible.

How renewal works for credentials that do expire

You may never need this, but it explains why the question comes up at all. For credentials that do expire, Microsoft says:

  1. You renew by passing a free, unproctored, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
  2. The assessment becomes available six months before the expiration date, and not earlier.
  3. Passing extends the credential by one year from the expiration date.
  4. You can retake the assessment without a limit. After the second try you wait at least 24 hours between attempts.
  5. If the credential expires, you earn it again by passing the exam. Passing a beta exam or retaking the normal exam beforehand does not count as a renewal.

None of this is listed for AB-730 itself. We include it so you can recognize the process if Microsoft ever changes how this credential is handled.

Retake rules for the AB-730 exam

The exam page says that after a failed attempt you can retake it 24 hours later, and points to the general retake policy. That policy says:

RuleWhat Microsoft says
First retakeWait 24 hours after a failed attempt
Later retakesA 14-day wait between all later attempts, up to five
Annual limitNo more than five attempts in 12 months from the first attempt
After five failuresYou can try again 12 months after the date of your first attempt
Passed examsYou cannot retake a passed exam unless the certification has expired
FeesRetakes are paid

There is one exception to the waiting periods. If an internet outage or equipment failure interrupted your exam and Pearson VUE opened a case, you can ask Microsoft support to waive the wait. The request needs the Pearson VUE case number, and Microsoft grants waivers for no other reason.

A timeline example

Say you take AB-730 on a Monday and miss 700.

  • Tuesday, same time or later: the earliest you can sit it again. Most people should not. Use the score report, which shows a bar chart per skill area, to find your weak domain first.
  • Two weeks later: if you fail a second time, you wait 14 days before the third attempt.
  • Months later: if you somehow failed five times, you would count 12 months from your first attempt.

The waiting periods are limits, not targets. A sensible gap is long enough to fix the domain that dragged you down. Because retakes are paid, a few extra study days usually cost less than another attempt.

What happens when the outline changes

Microsoft changed the English version of AB-730 on October 20, 2026. Its study guide now shows “Skills measured as of October 20, 2026”, with four domains. The change log marked the audience profile as a major change, removed the area on creating and managing your own Copilot agents, and added a domain on prebuilt agents and Microsoft Copilot Cowork.

Practical consequences:

  • You attempt the version that is live on your exam date. A failed attempt on an older outline does not carry over, and the retake follows the outline at that time.
  • Other languages lag. Microsoft says localized versions update about eight weeks after English. If the exam is not available in your language, you can ask for an extra 30 minutes.
  • Study material ages fast. Copilot features change often, so check the date on any guide, including ours.

Microsoft’s pages do not mention a retirement date for AB-730, and we do not state one.

Next step

Read what the exam covers in the domains explained guide, and see whether the effort fits your goals in is AB-730 worth it. When you are ready to measure your readiness, the AB-730 practice tests give you a timed place to do it. The overview is at AB-730 Exam Guide.
