AB-730 Study Plan: 4-Week and 8-Week

The short version

Most people with some Copilot experience can prepare in four weeks at about four to five hours a week. If you are new to Copilot, Teams meetings features or agents, take eight weeks at two to three hours a week. These are rough ranges, and your own pace will differ. The plan follows the four domains of the outline Microsoft lists as “Skills measured as of October 20, 2026”.

Before you start

Do three things first.

  1. Read the Microsoft study guide once, top to bottom. It is short.
  2. Get hands-on time. This exam is about using tools, so reading alone is slow. If your work gives you Copilot, use it for real tasks every day. If you only have Copilot Chat, you can still practice prompts, files and agents.
  3. Take a first practice set cold, before studying. It shows your starting point and costs nothing in confidence.

Keep a simple note file with one line per thing you got wrong. You will use it in the last three days.

The 4-week plan (about 4 to 5 hours a week)

WeekFocusWhat to do
1Generative AI fundamentalsLearn how context (Work IQ, web, current app) changes answers. Study data protection, permissions, prompt injection, over-reliance and verification. Try each Copilot experience once.
2Prompts and chatsWrite, refine, save, schedule and share prompts. Try model selection. Practice finding, renaming and deleting chats and building a Notebook.
3Content, meetings and agentsUse Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Run a Teams meeting with Facilitator, real-time catch-up and Intelligent recap. Create a Copilot Page. Try a prebuilt agent.
4Cowork and reviewDelegate a multi-step task to Copilot Cowork if you have access, and read its plan and results. Then take two full practice sets, review every answer, and fix gaps.

The 8-week plan (about 2 to 3 hours a week)

WeekFocus
1Read the study guide. Take a cold practice set. Learn what Copilot Chat, Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents and Cowork each are.
2Fundamentals: privacy, permissions, sensitivity of data, how context affects answers.
3Fundamentals, part two: risks (inaccuracy, prompt injection, over-reliance) and verification steps. Short practice set on domain 1.
4Prompts: structure, references, model choice, refining. Save, schedule and share.
5Chats and Notebooks, then content work in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus connectors.
6Meetings: preparation, Facilitator, real-time catch-up, Intelligent recap, Copilot Pages.
7Agents and Cowork: prebuilt agents, skills, delegating, reviewing plan and results, limits.
8Full practice sets, review, rest.

How to use practice exams in the plan

Use them to find gaps, not to memorize. Take the first set cold. After each set, look at your score per domain and spend your next study session on the weakest one. Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right, because a lucky guess looks like knowledge in a score. When you score consistently above your target on fresh sets, you are in good shape. Our AB-730 practice tests go from direct questions up to long scenarios, so start with the first and finish with the last.

Remember that practice exams measure readiness. They do not replace Microsoft’s learning material or hands-on use.

The last three days

  • Three days out: Take one full timed set. Add every miss to your note file. Do not start new topics.
  • Two days out: Reread the note file and the explanations for your weakest domain. Try the exam sandbox from Microsoft so the interface feels familiar.
  • The day before: Light review only, for example the differences between Copilot Chat, agents and Cowork, and how Facilitator differs from Copilot in Teams. Check your ID, your booking and, for an online exam, your room and equipment. Sleep.
  • Exam day: Arrive early, read each question to the end, answer everything, and flag the long scenarios for a second pass.

If the outline changes under you

The English outline changed on October 20, 2026. If you started with older material, spend extra time on the agents domain and Cowork, which are new, and skip anything about building your own agents; Microsoft’s change log lists that as removed.

Next step

Check what each domain means in practice on the domains explained page, then try the sample questions to see how a gap shows up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pass without a Copilot license?

Microsoft does not require one. Copilot Chat is available to eligible Microsoft 365 users without the add-on license, and the explanations in practice sets can fill some gaps. Hands-on time with the full Copilot features still helps.

How many practice sets should I take?

Enough to see a steady trend, usually three to five. More repeats of the same set only teach you that set.

What if I fall behind?

Drop depth, not domains. Cover every domain once at a basic level before going deeper in any of them.
