The short version
Microsoft’s AB-730 page does not list a required certification or course before the exam. It describes a candidate who has used generative AI tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork and prebuilt agents, and who is comfortable with Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Excel. This page turns that description into a checklist you can use today.
Required versus recommended
Required. Nothing is listed on the exam page. You book the exam through Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE with a Microsoft account.
Recommended, according to Microsoft. Experience with prompts, agents, notebooks and pages, and the core Microsoft 365 apps. Familiarity with everyday business tasks such as drafting emails, building presentations, generating images and managing documents. The audience profile in the October 20, 2026 study guide also names prompt engineering, context engineering and large language models as elements you should have used.
Not needed. Coding, building AI apps, or administration skills. Microsoft says the certification is for using AI, not building it.
Access matters more than a prerequisite
The exam asks about features, so seeing them helps. Here is what we can verify from Microsoft’s pages as of October 18, 2026:
- Copilot Chat is available to eligible Microsoft 365 users without the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license, but it has less organizational grounding. Work IQ-based features need the licensed experience.
- Facilitator is included with a Microsoft Copilot license, and Microsoft lists Teams and Loop requirements.
- Microsoft’s Cowork FAQ says faculty and staff in education can use Cowork and students are not eligible at this time. Usage is billed to the organization based on consumption, so ask your IT team before testing.
If you cannot reach a feature, do not give up. Read Microsoft’s documentation on it and use practice-set explanations to understand what it does and when it applies, but plan a little more study time.
Skills self-check
Tick the items you can do or explain today.
Fundamentals
- Explain in two sentences why Copilot does not show you files you cannot open.
- Name three risks of generative AI at work and a check for each.
- Say when you would use Copilot Chat, an agent, or Cowork.
Prompts and chats
- Write a prompt with a clear task, context and format, and improve it after a weak answer.
- Save, schedule or share a prompt.
- Find, rename and delete a chat, and know what a Notebook is for.
Content and meetings
- Ask Copilot to draft or analyze something in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, then check it against the goal.
- Prepare for a meeting, catch up in real time, and use the recap.
- Explain the difference between Copilot in Teams and Facilitator.
- Turn rough ideas into a Copilot Page and share it.
Agents
- Give one scenario where a prebuilt agent helps.
- Describe how Cowork plans, uses skills and asks for approval.
- Name at least two limits Cowork has.
If you tick fewer than half, spend the first two weeks on hands-on use before you do any practice sets. If you tick most of them, go straight to the study plan.
Suggested preceding certifications
The exam page lists none. Microsoft does offer other exams on Copilot or AI, but the AB-730 page does not name them as steps, so we do not treat them as such.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take a course first?
Microsoft lists none. Microsoft Learn offers training for its exams (see the AB-730 exam page), but none of it is listed as required.
Do I need a paid Copilot license?
Not to book the exam. Some features in the outline are part of the licensed experience, so access to them makes studying easier.
Is this exam useful for non-technical staff?
Yes. It is aimed at business users, and no coding or admin background is required.
