The short version
AB-730 is a beginner exam, and the concepts are not technical. The difficulty comes from two places: the details of which Copilot feature does what, and a changing product. Someone who uses Microsoft 365 Copilot daily and studies the outline for a few weeks should find it manageable. Someone who has only chatted with an AI assistant a few times should expect to learn more than they think.
What Microsoft says about the level
Microsoft labels the credential beginner and says candidates should have experience with generative AI productivity tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork and prebuilt agents. No coding is involved. You get 45 minutes and need 700 on a 1 to 1,000 scale. That is a short exam, so reading speed and calm matter.
Who finds it easier
- People who use Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams every week.
- People who have run or attended Teams meetings with Copilot features switched on.
- Anyone who has already tried a prebuilt agent or Cowork on a real task.
- Learners who are comfortable with Microsoft 365 permissions and sensitivity labels at a basic level.
Who finds it harder
- People who know AI in general but not Microsoft’s naming, such as Work IQ, Notebooks, Pages, Facilitator and Cowork. Many questions are about which Microsoft feature applies.
- People without a Copilot license, who have never seen some features. It is still possible, but you need to rely more on documentation and explanations.
- Anyone who studied older material. The English outline changed on October 20, 2026. Microsoft removed creating and managing agents and added a full domain on prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork.
Why the details bite
The questions we expect, based on the skills list, ask you to choose between options that look similar. Examples of pairs to keep apart:
- Copilot Chat and Cowork: Microsoft describes Chat as quick single-session help and Cowork as multistep work across apps.
- Copilot in Teams and Facilitator: one is private to you, the other shows its replies to the whole meeting.
- A prebuilt agent and a custom one, which the skills list asks you to choose between.
- Real-time catch-up during a meeting and the recap afterward.
None of these is hard in isolation. The risk is a scenario with two plausible answers where one condition decides.
Common reasons people fail
- Studying from a single source or from old material. The product and the outline both move quickly.
- Skipping hands-on use. Reading about Notebooks is different from using one.
- Ignoring data protection and risk. Prompt injection, over-reliance and verification are part of the largest domain (25-30%).
- Rushing scenario questions. With 45 minutes, people skim and miss the condition that decides.
- Treating 700 as 70 percent. Microsoft says it is a scaled score, so a feeling of “I got most right” proves little.
- Not knowing the new agents domain. It is up to a quarter of the exam, and it covers limits as well as features.
How to judge your readiness
No score can promise a pass, but you can build evidence. Try this:
- Take a practice set cold, then study, then take fresh sets. Look for steady improvement rather than one good day.
- Check your score per domain. A strong average with one weak domain is a risk, because every domain is at least 20% of the exam.
- Aim to score consistently above your target on sets you have not seen before, with margin for exam-day nerves. Our AB-730 practice tests use pass marks we set high on purpose (80%, and 85% for the last set), because practice at home with explanations at hand is easier than a proctored session. Those are our own marks, not Microsoft’s.
- Explain each domain out loud in two minutes without notes.
- Do the exam sandbox from Microsoft once, so the interface is not a surprise.
A word on retakes
If it goes badly, you can retake after 24 hours, then there is a 14-day wait between later attempts, with up to five attempts in 12 months. Retakes are paid, so it is cheaper to be ready the first time. Use your score report’s per-skill bar chart to focus your next round.

Frequently asked questions
Is AB-730 easier than other Microsoft exams?
It is a beginner exam without technical configuration, so many people find it lighter than role-based exams. The feature details still need real study.
Does a practice score of 80% mean I will pass?
No. Practice scores are an indicator only. Sets differ in difficulty, and the real exam uses a scaled score.
Should I wait for the new outline?
Check which outline applies on your exam date. From October 20, 2026 the English exam follows the new one, so study for that.
