AB-620 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

The Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate credential expires every year, but renewing is free. You pass a short, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window before the expiration date, and Microsoft extends the credential by one year. If you fail the AB-620 exam itself, you can retry after 24 hours, then wait 14 days between later attempts, with at most five attempts in 12 months.

Does the credential expire?

Yes. Microsoft states that associate, expert, and specialty certifications expire annually, and the AB-620 study guide repeats this. The AI Agent Builder Associate credential is an associate-level credential, so the yearly rule applies. Only fundamentals certifications do not expire, and this is not one of them.

Microsoft does not print a fixed number of days on the AB-620 pages. The rule on the renewal page is simple: pass the renewal assessment before your certification expires. Your Microsoft Learn profile shows your own dates.

How renewal works

Microsoft describes four features of the renewal assessment:

  • It is free. There is no fee to renew.
  • It has a six-month window. You can take it at any point in the six months before your expiration date. Microsoft says you will get an email reminder once you are eligible.
  • It is short, unproctored, and open book. It focuses on recent technology and industry updates, so it is shorter than the original exam. You take it online through Microsoft Learn, not at a test center.
  • It extends the credential by one year. The new year is counted from your old expiration date, not from the day you passed. Taking it early costs you nothing.

To start, connect your Microsoft Learn profile to your certification profile and look for the renew button. Microsoft also provides free learning modules on the renewal page for your certification, aimed at the recent changes.

What if you fail the renewal assessment?

There is no limit on renewal attempts. Microsoft’s retake page says you can try again immediately after a failed renewal attempt. After the second try, you need to wait at least 24 hours between later attempts. You only have to pass before the expiration date.

Because the assessment is open book, treat it as a chance to read what changed. For an exam like AB-620, where Copilot Studio features move quickly, the changes between two yearly renewals can be real.

What if you miss the deadline?

The renewal page tells you to pass before your certification expires, and the retake page says you cannot retake an exam you passed unless your certification has expired. Read together, that suggests a lapsed credential means taking the full exam again. The pages we checked do not describe the lapsed case step by step, so confirm the current rule in your Microsoft Learn profile before you rely on it. The safe plan is to renew early in the window.

Retaking the AB-620 exam itself

If you do not pass the exam on your first try, Microsoft’s rules for role-based exams apply:

AttemptWaiting time
Second attempt24 hours after the first
Third to fifth attempts14 days between each attempt
Sixth attemptNot before 12 months from your first attempt

Other rules from the same page:

  • You cannot take the same exam more than five times in 12 months, counted from the first attempt.
  • You cannot retake an exam you have already passed, unless your certification has expired.
  • You pay for every attempt where a fee applies. Microsoft prints no AB-620 fee, only that the price depends on the country or region.
  • A waiver of the waiting period exists only for internet or equipment failures during the exam that produced a Pearson VUE case number.

The score report shows how you did per skill area, which helps you decide what to study before the next attempt. See the exam format page for how scoring works.

What if the exam changes or is retired?

Microsoft updates exams periodically and updates the English version first. Localized versions follow about eight weeks later. The AB-620 study guide also warns that the exam may contain questions on preview features if they are commonly used. The agent features in Copilot Studio change often, so the skills list can change between your first exam and your renewals.

Microsoft prints no retirement date for AB-620. If an exam is retired, Microsoft says so on the certification page, and that page is the place to check. The certification page for the older AI-102 exam shows this pattern: it is marked as retired.

A timeline example

This is an illustration, not a Microsoft schedule.

  1. March 3: you fail AB-620 on a first attempt with a weak score in the testing and management area.
  2. March 4 or later: you are allowed a second attempt after 24 hours, but you choose to study for three weeks first.
  3. March 28: you pass. The credential is valid for one year.
  4. Next September: your renewal window opens, six months before the expiration date.
  5. Next January: you pass the free assessment well before the deadline. The credential now runs one more year from the old expiration date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay to renew?

No. Microsoft says renewing is free.

Can I renew early?

Yes, any time inside the six-month window. The extension counts from your expiration date, so you lose nothing by going early.

Is the renewal assessment the same as the exam?

No. Microsoft says it is shorter, unproctored, and open book, and it focuses on recent updates.
