DP-600 vs DP-700: Which Exam First?

The short version

Take DP-600 if your daily work is semantic models, reports, and querying data in Fabric. Take DP-700 if your daily work is getting data in, transforming it, orchestrating it, and keeping it healthy. Both are intermediate, associate-level, 100-minute exams, and both use the same 700 pass mark. If your job spans both sides, pick the one that matches your current tasks first, and consider the other later.

Facts come from Microsoft’s certification pages and study guides, checked October 22, 2026. Microsoft does not publish a question count for either exam, though it says most of its exams have 40 to 60.

What each exam is about

DP-600 has a clear center of gravity. Almost half (45-50%) is Prepare data, and the remaining half is split between maintaining a solution (security, governance, version control, deployment) and building and tuning semantic models. DAX and Power BI model design matter here. Read the DP-600 domains for the detail.

DP-700 is spread evenly across three areas: implementing and managing the solution (workspace settings, lifecycle, security, orchestration), ingesting and transforming data (loading patterns, batch and streaming), and monitoring and optimizing (errors, refresh, performance). PySpark, streaming, and troubleshooting show up in the outline. See the DP-700 overview.

Where they overlap

  • Both cover Fabric workspaces, item and workspace access controls, sensitivity labels, endorsement, and deployment pipelines.
  • Both expect you to choose between data stores and to know shortcuts and the SQL analytics endpoint.
  • Both include KQL and SQL in some form.
  • Both mention transformation basics, such as removing duplicates, handling missing data, and denormalizing.

If you study for one, you build a base for the other. The overlap is real, but it is not total.

How to choose

  1. Look at your last month of work. Mostly models, measures, and report performance: DP-600. Mostly pipelines, notebooks, and failed loads: DP-700.
  2. Look at your language skills. Strong DAX and weak Spark points to DP-600. The reverse points to DP-700.
  3. Look at your next role. Analytics engineer or BI developer: DP-600. Data engineer: DP-700.
  4. Take both if you cover the whole chain, but not in the same week. Each exam deserves its own plan.

Microsoft lists no required order or prerequisite between them on the pages we checked. If you want a different neighbor, see DP-600 vs PL-300.

Studying for both

Start with the one that fits your job, because hands-on familiarity makes the second one easier. The shared topics (security, deployment pipelines, data stores) carry over. Plan separate weeks for the unique areas: DAX and semantic models for DP-600, Spark, streaming and monitoring for DP-700. Both credentials expire unless renewed, and renewal is free, so owning two means two annual assessments. See the renewal guide.

Next step

For DP-600, start with the overview and the study plan, then test yourself with the DP-600 practice exams. For DP-700, see the DP-700 overview and the DP-700 practice exams. Practice exams measure readiness and do not replace Microsoft’s learning material.

Frequently asked questions

Is DP-700 harder than DP-600?

It depends on your background. Spark and streaming are harder for analysts. DAX and model design are harder for engineers.

Do I need one exam before the other?

Not according to the Microsoft pages we checked.

Can I take both in the same month?

Nothing stops you, but each needs its own preparation. Most people do better with a gap.
