The short version
DP-700 is Microsoft’s associate-level exam for data engineers who build solutions in Microsoft Fabric. It tests whether you can choose the right Fabric tool for a job, load and transform data, secure the workspace, and keep everything running well. This guide follows the study guide that Microsoft lists as “Skills measured as of October 19, 2026”.
What the exam is
The full name is Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric. Passing it earns the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate credential, which Microsoft labels intermediate level. Microsoft describes the role as having subject matter expertise with data loading patterns, data architectures, and orchestration processes.
Unlike a fundamentals exam, this one expects you to decide, not just recognize. A typical question describes a team, a data source, and two or three requirements, then asks which Fabric feature meets all of them. Knowing that a shortcut exists is not enough. You need to know when a shortcut beats a copy, and when mirroring beats both.
It also expects working skill with three languages: SQL, PySpark, and KQL (Kusto Query Language). You do not need to be an expert, but you should be able to read short code and tell what it does.
If you studied for the older DP-203 exam, note that Microsoft retired DP-203 on March 31, 2025. DP-700 is built around Fabric, so your knowledge of data engineering concepts carries over but product details do not.
Who it is for
Microsoft says you work closely with analytics engineers, architects, analysts, and administrators to design and deploy data engineering solutions for analytics. Your responsibilities include ingesting and transforming data, securing and managing an analytics solution, and monitoring and optimizing it. People who often take it include data engineers, SQL and Spark developers, BI developers, and cloud engineers moving to Fabric. The prerequisites page covers what helps before you start.

The three domains and their weightings
| Domain | Weighting |
|---|---|
| Implement and manage an analytics solution | 30-35% |
| Ingest and transform data | 30-35% |
| Monitor and optimize an analytics solution | 30-35% |
All three domains carry the same range, so no part of the exam is optional. Skipping monitoring because it feels less exciting than pipelines is a classic way to lose points.
Implement and manage an analytics solution
Workspace settings (Spark, domain, OneLake, and Apache Airflow), lifecycle management with version control, database projects, and deployment pipelines, security and governance, and orchestration. The security list is long: workspace and item access, row-, column-, object-, and file-level controls, dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels, endorsement, audit logs, and OneLake security.
Ingest and transform data
Full and incremental load patterns, preparing data for a dimensional model, batch ingestion with pipelines, shortcuts, and mirroring, transformation with PySpark, SQL, and KQL, and streaming with Eventstream, Spark structured streaming, and KQL, including windowing functions. It also covers messy data: duplicates, missing values, and late-arriving records.
Monitor and optimize an analytics solution
Monitoring ingestion, transformation, and semantic model refresh, setting up alerts, finding and fixing errors in pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks, Eventhouse, Eventstream, T-SQL, and shortcuts, and tuning performance for lakehouse tables, pipelines, warehouses, Spark, and queries.

Frequently asked questions
Does DP-700 expire?
Yes. Microsoft states that associate certifications expire annually and can be renewed for free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The exam format page explains how renewal works.
Is the exam only in English?
No. Microsoft lists 10 languages. The English version is updated first, and Microsoft says other languages follow about eight weeks later.
Do I need to know SQL, Python, and KQL?
You should be able to read and reason about SQL, PySpark, and KQL. Microsoft names all three as skills for this role, so plan to practice each.
