DP-700 Prerequisites and Skills Check

The short version

The Microsoft pages we checked do not list a required certification or course before DP-700, and they do not name an exam you must pass first. What they do describe is a candidate with subject matter expertise in data loading patterns, data architectures, and orchestration, who is skilled at SQL, PySpark, and KQL. Treat that as the real entry requirement.

Required versus recommended

What it means
RequiredNothing formal is stated on the certification page or the study guide. You can book the exam when you are ready.
Expected by MicrosoftExpertise in data loading patterns, data architectures, and orchestration; skill in manipulating and transforming data with SQL, PySpark, and KQL.
Helpful (our advice)Time in a real Fabric workspace, basic cloud and storage concepts, and some experience with a lakehouse or warehouse.

Microsoft also notes that you work with analytics engineers, architects, analysts, and administrators. In plain terms, you should be able to talk about security, deployment, and monitoring, not only about queries.

Knowledge to bring

  • Data fundamentals: tables, joins, aggregation, dimensional modeling (facts and dimensions), and the difference between full and incremental loads.
  • SQL: reading and writing queries, understanding views and stored procedures, and knowing what a warehouse can do that a read-only endpoint cannot.
  • PySpark: DataFrames, reading and writing Delta tables, simple transformations, and basic structured streaming ideas.
  • KQL: reading short queries, filtering, summarizing, and time windows.
  • Cloud basics: storage, identity and access, and how a managed service differs from one you run yourself.

Skills self-check

Answer honestly. If you hesitate on more than a few, plan extra time in your study plan.

  1. Can you explain the difference between a lakehouse and a warehouse in Fabric?
  2. Can you explain what a OneLake shortcut does and how it differs from mirroring?
  3. Can you read a PySpark snippet that filters, joins, and writes to a Delta table?
  4. Can you read a KQL query that summarizes events by time bin?
  5. Can you describe full versus incremental loading and one way to find changed rows?
  6. Can you explain how workspace roles differ from item permissions?
  7. Can you say when you would use row-level security and when dynamic data masking?
  8. Can you describe what Git integration does and what a deployment pipeline does?
  9. Can you choose between Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline, and a notebook for a given requirement?
  10. Can you name the types of streaming window and say how they differ?
  11. Do you know where to look in Fabric when a pipeline run fails?
  12. Can you name two ways to improve the speed of a slow lakehouse table or warehouse query?

If you answered yes to nine or more, you are in a good position to start focused exam preparation. If you answered yes to fewer than five, spend time on Microsoft’s free learning paths and hands-on practice first.

Suggested path

Microsoft does not name a certification you should earn before DP-700, so we do not either. A sensible order for newcomers is:

  1. Learn Fabric basics and OneLake with Microsoft’s training.
  2. Practice SQL and PySpark on small datasets until reading code feels natural.
  3. Build a small end-to-end project: ingest, transform, secure, schedule, and monitor.
  4. Review the exam format, then follow the study plan.

If you earned the retired DP-203 credential, your concepts help, but Microsoft stopped offering that exam on March 31, 2025, and Fabric details differ. Start with the current DP-700 study guide at Microsoft Learn.
