DP-600 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

Yes, the credential from DP-600 expires. Microsoft lists a renewal frequency of 12 months, and you renew by passing a free, unproctored, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second try and 14 days between later tries, with no more than five attempts in 12 months. All of this comes from Microsoft’s pages, checked on October 22, 2026.

Does the credential expire?

The Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate credential is a role-based credential, and Microsoft says role-based credentials expire unless you renew them. The certification page shows a renewal frequency of 12 months. Only fundamentals-level credentials are exempt, and this one is not a fundamentals credential.

Microsoft’s pages we read do not print a single “expires on” rule for the first year in plain words, so look at your own certification profile on Microsoft Learn. It shows the exact expiration date for your credential. That date is the one that counts.

How renewal works

Renewal is a separate assessment, not a second sitting of DP-600. These are the rules Microsoft publishes:

  • It costs nothing.
  • You take it online on Microsoft Learn, without a proctor.
  • It is open book.
  • It is shorter than the original exam and focuses on recent technology and industry updates.
  • You can take it at any time inside a six-month eligibility window before your expiration date.
  • When you pass, your credential is extended by one year from the expiration date, not from the day you passed.

That last point is useful: renewing early does not waste time. If you pass in the first week of the window, you still get a full year added to the old expiration date.

Microsoft says you receive an email reminder once you become eligible. Do not rely on it alone. Check your profile now and then, and put the date in your calendar.

Renewal retakes

The renewal assessment has a much friendlier retake rule than the exam. Microsoft says there is no limit on attempts. If you do not pass, you can try again immediately. After the second try, you wait at least 24 hours between further attempts. The only deadline is that you must pass before the credential expires.

What if the credential lapses?

Microsoft’s renewal page says you must pass the assessment before your certification expires. The pages we read do not describe in detail what happens afterwards. Do not assume you can renew late. The retake policy tells us one important thing: you cannot retake an exam you have passed unless your certification has expired. So an expired credential is the situation where taking DP-600 again becomes possible. Check Microsoft’s renewal FAQ and your profile for the current rules before you plan around a lapse.

Exam retakes: the rules

These rules apply when you sit DP-600 itself and do not pass:

SituationRule
First failed attemptWait 24 hours before you retake
Later attemptsWait 14 days between each attempt
Attempts per yearNo more than five in 12 months from the first attempt
After five failed attemptsYou can try again 12 months after the date of your first attempt
Already passedNo retake unless the credential has expired
FeeYou pay for every retake, if a fee applies where you are

Microsoft allows one exception to the waiting period. If you had an internet problem or equipment failure during the exam and Pearson VUE opened a case, you may ask for a waiver. You need the case number. Without such a case, no waiver is granted.

For the exam day rules, scoring and breaks, see the exam format page.

When the exam changes

DP-600 gets updated from time to time. Microsoft’s study guide says the English version was scheduled to change on October 19, 2026, and that translated versions follow about eight weeks later. If that schedule holds, localized versions would change around mid-December 2026, but Microsoft notes that the date can slip. If your language is not yet updated, you can ask for 30 extra minutes. The domains explained page follows the October 19, 2026 outline.

Passing an older version does not erase your credential. Your renewal date is what matters, and the renewal assessment is built around recent updates.

A timeline example

This example is made up to show the dates, not a promise about your own profile.

  1. You pass DP-600 on March 3, 2027.
  2. With a 12-month renewal frequency, the credential would expire around March 3, 2028.
  3. The six-month window would open around September 3, 2027.
  4. You pass the renewal assessment on September 20, 2027.
  5. The credential is extended by one year from the old expiration date, to around March 3, 2029.

Your own dates will come from your profile. Always trust it over any example.

Next step

If you are still preparing, the study plan shows how to spread the work, and the DP-600 overview lists the domains. To check your readiness before booking, try the DP-600 practice exams. They are practice material and do not replace Microsoft’s learning content.
