The short version
There are no formal prerequisites. You can book the exam without holding another certification. Salesforce does suggest hands-on experience and, as optional extras, the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator and Platform App Builder certifications.
Required versus recommended
Required: nothing. Salesforce lists no prerequisites for this exam, and you must accept the Certification Program Agreement and Code of Conduct when you start.
Recommended by Salesforce: a mix of hands-on experience, training, Trailhead trails, and self-study. Salesforce also mentions Agentblazer status on Trailhead and says the Administrator and App Builder certifications are suggested but not required. Treat the documentation on Salesforce Help for each outline topic as part of your reading.

Know this before you start
The exam is about decisions on the Salesforce platform, so the platform comes first. The following background, which is our general advice, makes the material much easier:
- Standard and custom objects, fields, and records.
- Profiles, permission sets, and the idea of running in a user’s context.
- Flows, and the idea of an action that does something in the org.
- Sandboxes and moving changes to production.
- A basic idea of what a large language model does: it generates text from a prompt and context.
You do not need to write code. Model tuning and transformer internals are not in the outline.
Skills self-check
Answer these in your own words. If you hesitate on more than a few, spend time on the basics first.
- What is a sandbox, and why would you deploy from one to production?
- What does a permission set do?
- What is the difference between a record field and a related list?
- What is a prompt, and why does the context you give it matter?
- Why might a company want a model to use its own data and not only its general knowledge?
- Which kinds of tasks must always behave the same way, and which can tolerate variation?
After a few weeks of study you should also be able to answer:
- When do you choose an Employee agent and when a Service agent?
- When is a record merge field better than a retriever?
- What does a library do for you that you would otherwise do by hand?
Suggested earlier certifications
Salesforce suggests the Platform Administrator and Platform App Builder certifications as optional preparation. We do not know of any other preceding certification that Salesforce names for this exam. If you have neither, the free Trailhead material and a hands-on project can cover much of the same ground.
If you are starting from zero
- Learn the platform basics on Trailhead.
- Build a simple prompt template.
- Build a small agent.
- Then follow the study plan. The eight-week version is made for this case.
