The short version
Experienced architects often need somewhere around 40 to 80 hours, spread over four to eight weeks. Those numbers are our estimate, not Microsoft’s, and your background changes them a lot. If you sit the exam before November 16, 2026, put the most time into the Deploy domain (40-45%). From that date Plan is the largest domain (35-40%) and Deploy shrinks to 20-25%, so shift your time accordingly.
Before you start
Open the Microsoft Learn AB-100 study guide and keep it next to you. This plan follows the version titled “Skills measured as of October 14, 2026”. Microsoft also offers a free practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator (you need to sign in) and an exam sandbox, so use both early.
Get hands-on access. A trial or developer environment for Copilot Studio and Power Platform, plus a Microsoft Foundry project if you can, lets you see where settings live. The exam is about architecture, but many questions are easier when you have seen the screen. Our how to study guide covers note-taking and spaced review.
Keep one decision table as you go. Columns: situation, options, deciding factor, option you would pick. AB-100 questions are mostly “which one, and why”.
The 4-week plan (about 10 to 15 hours per week)
Week 1: Plan. Requirements and grounding data quality, the Cloud Adoption Framework AI adoption process, build versus buy versus extend, when custom models make sense, prompt library and prompt engineering guidelines, the AI Center of Excellence, ROI and total cost of ownership, and the model router. Finish with a one-page note on how you would justify an agent to a finance director.
Week 2: Design. Copilot in Dynamics 365 apps, task, autonomous, and prompt-and-response agents, Copilot Studio topics, fallback, agent flows, prompt actions, and the choice between standard language understanding and generative orchestration. Then extensibility: MCP, computer use, custom models in Foundry, Microsoft 365 agents, and prebuilt agents in Dynamics 365 finance, supply chain, and customer service.
Week 3: Deploy, part one. Monitoring and tuning (telemetry, metrics, user feedback, backlog), then testing (metrics, validation criteria, test scenarios across several Dynamics 365 apps, Copilot-assisted test cases). Take a first full-length timed set at the end of the week.
Week 4: Deploy, part two, then review. ALM for data, Copilot Studio agents and connectors, Foundry Agent Service, custom models, and Dynamics 365 AI. Then security, governance, responsible AI, data residency, access controls on grounding data, and audit trails. Spend the last two sessions on your weakest domain.
The 8-week plan (about 5 to 8 hours per week)
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Plan: requirements, grounding data, Cloud Adoption Framework AI adoption |
| 2 | Plan: build, buy or extend, custom models, prompt library, ROI, model router |
| 3 | Design: Dynamics 365 Copilot and agent types, Copilot Studio topics, flows, prompt actions |
| 4 | Design: extensibility (MCP, computer use, Foundry models), Microsoft 365 and prebuilt agents |
| 5 | Deploy: monitoring, telemetry, tuning, testing |
| 6 | Deploy: ALM across agents, connectors, models, and Dynamics 365 AI |
| 7 | Deploy: security, governance, responsible AI, residency, audit |
| 8 | Full review, timed practice, and weak-spot repair |
The slower pace suits people who work full time or are new to Foundry or Copilot Studio.
How to use practice exams
- Early check (week 1 or 2): take one set cold. Ignore the score. You are looking for the weak domain.
- After each domain: work through practice questions on that domain and read every explanation, including for options you did not pick.
- Two weeks out: take a full-length timed set in one sitting, without notes.
- Final week: repeat full sets until your scores stay consistently above your target. One good result proves little.
Practice exams measure readiness. They do not replace Microsoft Learn or hands-on time. Our AB-100 practice tests are five original sets of 100 questions each. Four use an 80% bar and the last one uses 85%, which is a deliberate margin and says nothing about what Microsoft requires. Read how we write our questions if you are curious.
The last 3 days
- Three days out: one full timed set. For every miss, write one line in the decision table.
- Two days out: reread only the look-alike pairs, such as declarative versus custom engine agents, or knowledge sources versus tools.
- The day before: a light 30-minute review. Check your booking, your ID, and, for an online exam, your room and computer. Sleep.
On the day, read our exam day guide. Microsoft does not deduct points for wrong answers, so answer everything.
Watch the date
Microsoft updated the English exam on October 14, 2026, and its change log marks three skill areas as minor changes. If your materials are older, compare them with the current study guide before you rely on them.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours do I need?
Many experienced architects land somewhere between 40 and 80 hours, but this varies widely. Hands-on time with Copilot Studio and Foundry shortens it.
Should I do hands-on labs?
Yes, where you can. Seeing where settings live makes scenario questions easier, even though the exam tests decisions rather than clicks.
Is a 4-week plan enough?
It works if you can give 10 to 15 hours a week and already know Copilot Studio and Dynamics 365. Otherwise choose the 8-week plan.
