The short version
Microsoft sets no prerequisite to sit AB-100 on the pages we checked. But to earn the Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert credential, you must pass AB-100 and also earn at least one listed associate-level certification. Experience on Microsoft business applications is assumed.
What is required
For the credential, Microsoft requires two things: the AB-100 exam, and at least one of the associate certifications on its list. The pages do not state an order, so whether you can take AB-100 first is not something we can confirm. Check the certification page before you plan.
The qualifying associates listed on October 18, 2026 are:
- Power Platform: PL-400 (Developer); PL-200 (Functional Consultant) is retired and counts for existing holders only
- Dynamics 365: MB-230 (Customer Service Functional Consultant), MB-310 (Finance Functional Consultant), MB-330 (Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant), MB-500 (Finance and Operations Apps Developer), MB-800 (Business Central Functional Consultant), MB-820 (Business Central Developer); MB-280 (Customer Experience Analyst) is retired and counts for existing holders only
- AI and agents: AI-300 (Machine Learning Operations Engineer), AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer), AB-620 (AI Agent Builder), AB-210 (Dynamics 365 Sales AI Consultant), AB-410 (Intelligent Applications Builder), AB-250 (Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer)
Use Microsoft’s AB-100 certification page for the current list, since the exam page and certification page differed slightly when we checked.
What is recommended
Microsoft’s audience description assumes you already:
- Design secure, scalable, integrated solutions across several Microsoft services.
- Know core Dynamics 365 products, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry Tools, and Foundry Models.
- Work with agents, prompts, and more than one language model.
- Understand open standards such as A2A and MCP, and responsible AI practice.
Microsoft’s AB-100 training course is described as an architecture-level step before focused exam study. It says it is not test preparation, so treat it as background reading, not a substitute for the study guide.
Skills self-check
Rate yourself honestly. If you can explain most of these in a few sentences, you are in good shape.
- I can explain when an agent is worth it and when plain automation is better.
- I can describe what makes grounding data good or bad.
- I can compare declarative agents, custom engine agents, and Copilot Studio agents.
- I can list what happens to an agent between a development and a production environment.
- I know the difference between a knowledge source, a tool, and a connector.
- I can describe how MCP and computer use extend an agent.
- I can name three ways to monitor an agent and what each shows.
- I can describe how I would test an agent beyond “ask it a few questions”.
- I can explain data residency and why it matters for a model deployment.
- I can outline a simple ROI case, including costs beyond licenses.
Fewer than half? Start with the study plan and the 8-week schedule.
Gaps and how to close them
No Dynamics 365 exposure. Read the Microsoft Learn material on the apps your target scenarios use and try a trial environment.
No Copilot Studio experience. Build one small agent with knowledge and one tool. The exam is about architecture, but you will answer faster once you have seen the screens.
No Foundry experience. Look at model catalog choices, deployments, and evaluation, even briefly.
Weak on governance. Read about data policies, environments, and responsible AI. They make up a big part of the Deploy domain.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a certification before I can book AB-100?
Not that we found on Microsoft’s pages. You do need a qualifying associate certification to earn the credential.
Is coding required?
Microsoft’s skills list does not require writing code, but the audience description expects you to work with models, prompts, and agents.
