The short version
If you fail AB-100, you can retake it after 24 hours, then wait 14 days between later attempts, with a limit of five attempts in 12 months. Once you hold the expert credential, it expires after a year unless you pass a free, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you let it lapse, you earn it again by passing the required exam. This page uses Microsoft Learn pages checked on October 22, 2026.
Retakes: the exact rules
Microsoft publishes one retake policy for role-based exams, and AB-100 falls under it. The page for AB-100 itself has no special retake rule.
- After a first fail, wait 24 hours.
- After that, wait 14 days between every attempt, up to five attempts.
- No more than five attempts within 12 months, counted from your first attempt. After five fails, you become eligible again 12 months after that first attempt.
- You cannot retake an exam you passed, unless the certification has expired.
- You pay again for a retake, if a fee applies. We do not print prices because they depend on country and change.
There is one waiver. If a connectivity problem or equipment failure interrupted your exam and a Pearson VUE case was opened, you can ask Microsoft to waive the waiting period. The case number is required, and Microsoft says no other reason qualifies.
The wait is a built-in study break. Spend it on the score report, not on rebooking. Your report shows a bar per skill area but no question-level detail, so use it to pick the domain to rebuild. Our exam format page explains the report, and the study plan shows how to rebuild a weak area.
What happens when the exam changes
AB-100 does not have a retirement date on its exam page today. It does have a scheduled update. Microsoft states that the English exam is updated on November 16, 2026, and that localized versions follow roughly eight weeks later, though it warns that the schedule may slip.
What this means for you:
- If your attempt happens after the update, you are tested on the new skills list. The weightings change: Plan 35-40%, Design 30-35%, Deploy 20-25% on Microsoft’s current pages. Earlier we published a different split, so check the domains explained page and the vendor page for the version in force on your date.
- A retake is a fresh sitting. Microsoft does not say that your earlier attempt carries any credit forward, and a failed attempt gives you no partial pass.
- Because localized versions lag, a retake in another language may still follow the older outline for a while. Confirm at booking.
Renewal: how the credential stays valid
The expert credential is a role-based certification. Microsoft says associate, expert, and specialty certifications expire unless renewed, and that fundamentals certifications do not.
Key points from Microsoft’s renewal pages:
- Renewal is free.
- You take an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. It is unproctored and open book.
- The assessment focuses on recent updates, so it is shorter than the exam. Microsoft’s FAQ says about 45 minutes.
- You become eligible six months before the expiry date. You cannot renew earlier than that.
- Passing extends the certification by one year from the expiry date, not from the day you passed. Your Learn profile updates immediately.
- There is no limit on attempts. If you fail, you may retry immediately. After the second attempt, wait at least 24 hours between tries.
- Renewal assessments follow the same update cadence as the exams, and come in the same languages as the exam.
- Passing a beta exam or retaking the original exam does not renew anything. The assessment is the only path.
Microsoft emails you when you become eligible, if your profile has an email and you agreed to communications. Do not depend on it. Look for the Renew button in the Certifications section of your Learn profile.
If the credential lapses
Microsoft’s FAQ is blunt: if your certification expires, you must earn it again by passing the required exam or exams. For this credential that means AB-100 again. The FAQ points to a separate expiration policy page for details, so read it if you are in that spot.
The associate certification you needed is separate. Microsoft states that an expert certification does not expire just because its associate prerequisite does, and each must be renewed on its own. So you track two dates, not one.
If a certification is being retired, Microsoft says the renewal deadline may be moved earlier, and the Learn profile shows a “renew by” date that accounts for the retirement. AB-100 shows no retirement date today.
A timeline example
This is an illustration, not a prediction. Dates are invented.
- March 10, 2027: you hold a qualifying associate certification, and you pass AB-100. The expert credential is awarded, valid for one year.
- September 2027: the renewal assessment becomes available, six months before expiry.
- October 2027: you pass the assessment. Your expiry moves one year past the original expiry date, to March 2029.
- If you skip it and the date passes, you sit AB-100 again.
Your own Learn profile shows the real expiry date and time. Microsoft notes that it is expressed in UTC, so do not leave it for the last evening.
