The short version
Yes, the credential you earn with SC-500 expires. Microsoft role-based credentials are valid for one year, and you extend them for free by passing a short online assessment during the six months before the expiry date. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later ones. This page was checked against Microsoft Learn on October 22, 2026. For the exam itself, see the SC-500 overview.
Does the SC-500 credential expire?
Passing SC-500 earns the Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate credential. Microsoft’s expiration policy says role-based (associate and expert) credentials are valid for one year from the date you complete all requirements. Only fundamentals credentials do not expire.
One honest caveat: the SC-500 certification page does not print a “renewal frequency” line the way some other pages do (the SC-300 page shows 12 months). We rely on Microsoft’s general rule for associate credentials. Your Microsoft Learn profile shows the exact expiry date for your own credential, and that date is the one that counts.
How renewal works
- Cost. Microsoft calls renewal free. We do not print any exam fee on this site.
- Window. The renewal assessment opens six months before your expiry date. Microsoft says you cannot renew earlier than that, and times are in UTC.
- Where. You find it in your Microsoft Learn profile, under Certifications, as a Renew button. Connect your certification profile to your Learn profile first.
- Format. It is an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, unproctored and open book. Microsoft describes it as shorter than the exam because it focuses on recent updates, and its FAQ puts the length at about 45 minutes.
- Result. Pass it and the new expiry date appears on your profile straight away. The extension is one year from the old expiration date, so taking it early does not waste time.
- Retries. There is no limit. After a failed first try you can try again immediately; after the second try you wait at least 24 hours between attempts. You must pass before the credential expires.
Microsoft says the renewal assessments follow the same update cadence as the exams, and that they are offered in the same languages as the matching exam. A renewal reminder email goes out when you become eligible, if your profile has an email address and you agreed to Microsoft’s communication terms.
Microsoft also says renewal is the only route. Retaking the exam early, or passing a beta exam, does not renew the credential.
What happens if it lapses
Microsoft is direct about this. Once a credential expires, you can no longer renew it. You have to earn it again by passing the required exam. So the six-month window is your whole safety net. Microsoft’s own advice is to take the renewal assessment well before the expiry date, to leave room for technical problems or a few retries.
Exam retake rules
These are Microsoft’s general rules for role-based exams, and they apply to SC-500:
- If you do not pass, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
- After that, a 14-day wait applies between all later attempts, up to five.
- You cannot take the same exam more than five times within 12 months of your first attempt. After five failures you become eligible again 12 months after the first attempt.
- You cannot retake an exam you have passed unless the credential has expired.
- You pay for each retake, where a fee applies.
Microsoft can waive the waiting period only when there was an internet or equipment failure during the exam and Pearson VUE opened a case. You need the case number. No other reason qualifies.
The exam format page has the scoring details that matter after a fail. Your score report shows performance by skill area, which tells you where to study before the next attempt.
If the exam or credential is retired
Microsoft reserves the right to retire exams and credentials at any time. A retired credential cannot be earned by new candidates, but it stays on your transcript until it expires. The predecessor shows how this can look: the Azure Security Engineer Associate page says that credential, its exam, and its renewal assessments retired on August 31, 2026, and that it can no longer be earned or renewed. Microsoft’s FAQ adds that when a retirement date comes before an expiry date, the renewal deadline can be shorter, and that Learn shows a “renew by” date that accounts for it.
That does not mean SC-500 is going anywhere. It means you should watch the dates on your Learn profile and the study guide rather than assume.
A timeline example
Say you pass SC-500 on March 10, 2027.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| March 10, 2027 | You earn the credential, valid one year |
| September 10, 2027 | Renewal window opens (six months before expiry) |
| October 2027 | A sensible time to renew, leaving weeks of margin |
| March 10, 2028 | Expiry date if you did not renew |
| After that | No renewal; you would pass the exam again |
If you renew in October 2027, the new expiry becomes March 10, 2029, one year after the old one.
