SC-500 Cloud and AI Security Engineer: 5 Practice Tests
Identity, storage, databases, networking, AI workloads and posture: 250 questions, explained per answer
Can you already pass SC-500, or are you two weeks of study away from it? These five practice tests answer that question before you pay for the exam.
This practice set holds 250 questions, written from the official study guide for Exam SC-500: Implementing End-to-End Security Controls for Cloud and AI Workloads, as published on Microsoft Learn and last updated on 31 July 2026. Every test follows the published domain weighting as closely as it can: identity, access and governance; storage, databases and networking; compute, including the new AI security block; and security posture management.
SC-500 replaced AZ-500, which retired on 31 August 2026 together with the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification. It is not a renumbering. Topics such as classic database encryption features and several networking subjects are gone from the objectives, and an entire block on securing AI workloads has been added: Entra Agent ID and Conditional Access for agents, Foundry guardrails, AI Gateway in API Management, Defender for AI Services and Purview DSPM for AI. Practising with AZ-500 material prepares you for an exam that no longer exists.
The five tests build on each other. Groundwork covers the core of each domain in short questions. In Practice makes you choose between services that are easy to confuse. Trade-offs presents two defensible options and one constraint that decides. Under the Hood asks for limits, parameter ranges, permissions and the order of operations. Exam Day is a full-length simulation at exam pace, with the longest stems and all domains mixed.
The explanations are the reason to buy this practice set rather than a cheaper question collection. Every option carries its own feedback saying why it is right or wrong, and what a wrong option would in fact be the answer to. Each question closes with a summary and a link to the Microsoft Learn page behind it.
Each test reports your score per domain, so you know which area to revisit. The pass mark is 80% for the first four tests and 85% for the simulation, deliberately higher than the real exam: SC-500 uses a scaled score of 700 out of 1000, which is not 70% of the points, and a home test is milder than a test centre.
What this practice set is not: not a video course, not a set of real exam questions, and not a substitute for the free Microsoft Learn learning paths or for hands-on work in Azure. It is a measuring instrument with an explanation behind every answer.
Groundwork: Core Controls Across Identity, Data, Compute and Posture
50 questions · 85 minutes · pass mark 80%
Fifty questions on the building blocks of every SC-500 domain: Microsoft Entra ID and Privileged Identity Management, Azure Key Vault, Azure Policy and role-based access control, storage and Azure SQL security, network security groups and private endpoints, AI workload protection, server hardening, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Security Copilot. Short stems, one concept per question, weighted to the official exam domains. The pass mark is 80%, higher than the real exam, because practising at home is milder than a test centre and because a first pass should leave no gaps. Every answer option has its own explanation, and each question closes with an explanation that links to the Microsoft Learn documentation.
In Practice: Choosing the Right Control
50 questions · 80 minutes · pass mark 80%
Fifty scenario questions that force you to tell neighbouring services apart, which is where most exam points are lost. Microsoft Defender for Key Vault against secrets scanning in Defender CSPM. Virtual Network Manager security admin rules against network security groups. Agentless scanning against Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Quick Access against per-app access in Microsoft Entra Private Access. The Defender sensor against agentless discovery for Kubernetes. Same domain weighting as the real exam, so the report per domain shows where to read further.
Trade-offs: When Two Answers Look Right
50 questions · 75 minutes · pass mark 80%
Fifty questions where two options are both defensible and one constraint decides: an on-premises client, a FIPS validation level, a plan that is already enabled, tenant isolation, revocability, or cost. This is the test that separates recognising a service from knowing when to pick it, and it is the closest preparation for the case-style questions on the real exam. Every option explains not only why it is wrong, but what it would be the right answer to.
Under the Hood: Limits, Parameters and Order of Operations
50 questions · 60 minutes · pass mark 80%
Fifty questions on the details you normally only know from working in the portal and the command line: service limits, parameter ranges, rule evaluation order, required permissions and the exact sequence of steps. Soft delete retention for Key Vault and Azure Backup, storage firewall rule limits, Azure Firewall rule processing, Azure Policy evaluation order, data collection rules, secure score maths and Security Copilot capacity. Short questions, but no room to guess.
Exam Day: Full-Length Simulation
50 questions · 70 minutes · pass mark 85%
A full-length simulation with the longest stems, several constraints per question and all four domains mixed, at exam pace. Take it last and take it cold. The pass mark is 85% rather than 80%: this test is a readiness gate, not a practice round, and a home test without a proctor, without exam nerves and without interactive lab items should be passed with more margin than the real thing. Score 85% here and you are ready to book SC-500.
What you will practice
- Test your SC-500 readiness with 250 exam-style questions across all four official domains, in the same weighting as the real exam.
- Tell neighbouring Azure security services apart: Defender plans, network controls, Key Vault permission models and SAS types.
- Learn from every answer: each option has its own explanation, plus a summary with a link to the Microsoft Learn documentation.
- Work up from knowledge questions to trade-offs, service limits and a full-length simulation at exam pace.
- Read a per-domain score report after each test, so you know which study area to go back to.
- Practise the AI security topics that are new in SC-500: Entra Agent ID, Foundry guardrails, Defender for AI Services and Purview DSPM for AI.

Who is this for
Azure administrators, cloud engineers and IT professionals who are moving into a security role and want to know whether they are ready for SC-500. Security analysts and SOC engineers who work in Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Microsoft Sentinel or Microsoft Security Copilot and now need the engineering side as well. Developers and DevOps engineers who are responsible for securing the platform their workloads run on. Students and career changers who have followed the Microsoft Learn material and want an honest measurement before booking the exam. Also anyone who studied for AZ-500: that exam and the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification retired on 31 August 2026, and SC-500 is not simply a renumbering. Several AZ-500 topics are gone, and a whole block on securing AI workloads has been added. Old AZ-500 practice material prepares you for the wrong exam. This practice set is a question bank with explanations: it measures and explains, it does not replace the official learning paths or hands-on practice.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with Azure administration: compute, networking and storage. You do not need to be a security specialist yet.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID, and some exposure to Microsoft 365 administration.
- These are practice tests, not a course. Use them alongside the free Microsoft Learn learning paths for SC-500, not instead of them.
