SC-500 Prerequisites and Skills Self-Check

The short version

Microsoft lists no required prerequisite certification for SC-500, and the exam page does not name any exam you must pass first. What it does describe is experience: practical work administering Azure and hybrid environments, strong familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID, and familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration. Treat these as the real entry bar. We checked Microsoft’s pages on October 18, 2026.

Required versus recommended

Required. Nothing formal. You can book the exam through Pearson VUE without holding another certification, as far as Microsoft’s exam page shows. The page does not list any entry exam.

Recommended by Microsoft. In the audience description, Microsoft says candidates should have:

  • practical experience administering Azure and hybrid environments, including compute, network, and storage;
  • strong familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID;
  • familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration.

Microsoft also describes the role as one that works with architects, administrators, engineers, analysts, and developers. It does not recommend a specific earlier certification on the pages we read, so we do not either. Many people build the background through Azure administration work. If you have none, expect to spend extra weeks on basics before the plan in the study plan.

A note for people coming from AZ-500

Microsoft’s AZ-500 page states that the exam, its related certification, and its renewal assessments retired on August 31, 2026. SC-500 has its own skills list. It is organized around different domains and adds AI security. If you hold AZ-500 knowledge, much of the core Azure security material will feel familiar, but check the new items one by one.

What to know before you start

You should be comfortable with these ideas before you work through the domains:

  • Subscriptions, resource groups, management groups, and role assignments in Azure.
  • Virtual networks, subnets, routing, and what a network security group does.
  • Storage accounts and virtual machines at an administrator level.
  • How sign-in, tokens, and groups work in Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Basic logging: what a Log Analytics workspace is and how a query reads data.

Skills self-check

Answer honestly. “Yes” means you have done it, not just read about it.

  1. Can you create a role assignment at a subscription scope and explain what inheritance does?
  2. Can you create a Conditional Access policy and explain the grant control you picked?
  3. Can you explain the difference between an app registration and an enterprise application?
  4. Can you create a key vault and restrict access to it with its firewall?
  5. Can you read an Azure Policy definition and say what its effect does?
  6. Can you create a network security group rule and explain how priority works?
  7. Can you set up a private endpoint and verify the DNS resolves to its private address?
  8. Can you describe how a storage account can be locked down to one network?
  9. Can you deploy a virtual machine and name two ways to protect its disks and its management access?
  10. Can you open Microsoft Defender for Cloud and find the recommendations for a subscription?
  11. Can you connect a data source to a Microsoft Sentinel workspace?
  12. Can you explain, in a sentence, what an AI agent identity needs in order to be governed like a user?

Count your honest “yes” answers. Nine or more suggests you can follow the 4-week plan. Five to eight suggests the 8-week plan with extra hands-on time. Fewer than five suggests building basic Azure administration and Entra ID skills first, using Microsoft’s free learning material.

Where to build the basics

Microsoft links training for this exam from the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate page and the SC-500 study guide. A free trial or pay-as-you-go Azure subscription lets you try things. Remember to delete resources afterward so they do not keep running.
