SC-500 Exam Format, Scoring and Retakes

The short version

SC-500 gives you 120 minutes, is proctored, and passes at a scaled score of 700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000. Microsoft does not publish the number of questions or the exact question types. The details below come from Microsoft Learn pages that we read on October 18, 2026.

Time and number of questions

Microsoft’s exam page for SC-500 says you have 120 minutes to complete the assessment. Separately, Microsoft’s exam-experience page explains that “seat time” is longer than exam time, because it includes reading the instructions, accepting the candidate agreement, and leaving optional comments at the end. Its table lists 140 minutes of seat time for role-based exams that may contain labs. SC-500 says you may get interactive components, so it is sensible to block out about two hours and twenty minutes.

Microsoft does not publish a question count for SC-500. Its general statement is that most Microsoft Certification exams contain between 40 and 60 questions, and that the number can change as exams are updated. Treat that as a general range, not a promise for this exam.

Delivery

The exam is proctored and scheduled through Pearson VUE. Microsoft’s page recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account instead of a work or school account, because exam records tied to an organizational account can be lost when you leave that organization. The price depends on the country or region where you take it, so check the price at booking.

Microsoft also notes that the exam may include interactive components. Microsoft says it does not announce specific question formats before the exam, but it provides an exam sandbox where you can try the interface with each question type.

Languages

Microsoft lists English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Korean, German, French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish. If the exam is not available in your preferred language, the study guide says you can request an additional 30 minutes.

Question styles you may meet

Microsoft’s exam-experience page shows demo videos of these styles: multiple choice, active screen, build list, case studies, drag and drop, hot area, labs, mark for review, and review screens. That page is a general description of the Microsoft exam interface. It does not say which of them appear on SC-500, so use the sandbox rather than guessing.

One practical point: Microsoft says you can open Microsoft Learn during role-based exams, in a split window, for everything on the learn.microsoft.com domain except Q&A, practice assessments, and your profile. The timer keeps running and no extra time is added. Microsoft describes it as a way to look up details for some questions, not to answer every question. Do not plan to learn the material on exam day.

Breaks

Microsoft built five minutes of break time into the exam duration. You can take unscheduled breaks, but the exam clock keeps running while you are away. After you start a break, you cannot go back to questions you have already seen, even if you marked them for review. So finish and review what you want to change before you start a break.

Scoring

  • Scores are scaled from 1 to 1,000, and 700 or higher passes.
  • A scaled score does not equal 70% of the points. Microsoft says the passing standard depends on the knowledge needed to show competence and on how difficult the questions are.
  • On multi-part questions you can earn some points without earning all of them.
  • Incorrect answers do not cost points, so answer everything.
  • Some questions may be unscored data-gathering items, and you cannot tell which ones.

Your score report shows your overall score, pass or fail, and a bar chart with performance for each skill area. It does not give a number for each section, and it does not tell you which questions you missed. Microsoft warns that section bars cannot be added up to estimate your total score, because sections have different numbers of questions.

Retakes

  • If you do not pass, you must wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
  • Between later attempts there is a 14-day wait, up to five attempts.
  • You cannot take the same exam more than five times in 12 months from the first attempt.
  • You cannot retake an exam you have passed unless your certification has expired.
  • You pay for each retake, where a fee applies.

Renewal

Associate certifications are renewed each year. Microsoft calls the renewal free, unproctored, and open book, and the window opens six months before expiry. Passing extends the certification by one year from the expiration date.
