The short version
Pick the 8-week plan if Microsoft Purview is new to you, and the 4-week plan if you already configure labels, DLP, or retention at work. Both plans cover the three domains in the same order and end with a full practice run. Hours are estimates for a typical candidate and vary a lot with experience.
Before you start
Three things make any plan work better.
- Download the study guide. Microsoft’s SC-401 study guide lists every skill under “Skills measured as of October 28, 2026”. Treat it as your checklist and tick items off as you can explain and configure them.
- Get hands-on access. Most of this exam is about where a setting lives and what it does. If you do not administer a Microsoft 365 tenant, try to get a trial or test tenant. What a trial includes changes over time, so check Microsoft’s current terms. Some features (Insider Risk Management, Audit Premium) depend on licensing, so reading may be your only option for them.
- Keep a “confusion list”. SC-401 is full of neighbors: exact data match versus document fingerprinting, sensitivity labels versus retention labels, retention policies versus retention labels, Audit versus Activity explorer. Every time you mix two up, write both down with the one-line difference.
Realistic hours
| Your starting point | Total hours | 4-week plan | 8-week plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works with Purview or Microsoft 365 security already | 30-50 | 8-12 per week | 4-6 per week |
| Microsoft 365 admin, new to Purview | 60-90 | Hard to fit | 8-11 per week |
| New to Microsoft 365 administration | 90-140 | Not advised | Consider 10-12 weeks |
These ranges are general experience, not a Microsoft figure. Your own pace after the first practice set is a better guide.
The 4-week plan
Week 1: Information protection. Classification first: sensitive info types, custom types, document fingerprinting, exact data match, trainable classifiers, Data explorer and Content explorer. Then sensitivity labels: scopes, protection and marking, publishing policies, auto-labeling, and labels on containers such as Teams, Microsoft 365 groups, and SharePoint sites. Take your first practice set at the end of the week, cold and untimed if you prefer.
Week 2: Protection for devices and mail, then DLP. Cover the Information Protection client, the scanner for on-premises files, and Message Encryption. Then start DLP: policy design, locations, rules, precedence, roles, and Adaptive Protection. End the week with Endpoint DLP: device requirements, advanced rules, settings, just-in-time protection, and activity monitoring.
Week 3: Retention, then Insider Risk Management. Retention labels, label policies (publish and auto-apply), adaptive scopes, retention policies, policy precedence and Policy lookup, and recovering retained content. Then Insider Risk Management: roles, connectors, policy templates, indicators, settings, alerts, cases, and notice templates.
Week 4: Alerts, activities, AI, and the full run. Audit and audit retention, Activity explorer, DLP alerts, Defender XDR alerts, Defender for Cloud Apps file policy alerts, eDiscovery, and the AI sub-area with DSPM for AI. Spend the last three days as described below.
The 8-week plan
Week 1: Foundations. Read the study guide and learn the portal layout: Microsoft Purview portal, Microsoft Defender portal, role groups, and where licenses matter. Review Microsoft Entra concepts that Purview relies on, such as groups and administrative units.
Week 2: Classification. Sensitive info types, custom types, fingerprinting, exact data match, trainable classifiers, OCR support, and the two explorers. Build one custom type yourself.
Week 3: Sensitivity labels. Create labels for items and containers, set protection and markings, publish them, and write an auto-labeling policy in simulation. Add labels in Defender for Cloud Apps. Take practice set 1.
Week 4: Client, scanner, and encryption; DLP basics. The Information Protection client and scanner, Message Encryption and Advanced Message Encryption. Then DLP policy design, roles, precedence, and file policies in Defender for Cloud Apps.
Week 5: Endpoint DLP and retention. Endpoint DLP settings and rules, then retention labels, retention policies, adaptive scopes, and precedence. Take practice set 2 and compare scores by domain.
Week 6: Insider Risk Management. Templates, indicators, connectors, Defender for Endpoint integration, forensic evidence, Adaptive Protection levels, alerts, cases, and notices.
Week 7: Alerts, audit, eDiscovery, and AI. Audit (Premium) licenses and retention, Activity explorer, alert handling in Purview and Defender XDR, eDiscovery searches, and DSPM for AI. Take practice set 3, the scenario-heavy one, and update your confusion list.
Week 8: Consolidate. Retake any set where a domain was weak, take a set under real time limits, then follow the final-three-days routine.
Using practice exams in the plan
Practice exams work as a measuring tool, not a reading list. Use them like this:
- Early: one set as a baseline, to find out which domain is weakest. Do not worry about the score.
- Middle: a set after each block of study, then spend as much time on the explanations as on the questions. Read the explanation for answers you got right, too.
- Late: one full set under timed conditions, in one sitting.
Our SC-401 practice exams are five sets of 100 original questions. They go from single-concept questions to long scenarios, and every answer option has an explanation. They support Microsoft’s own learning material and do not replace it. Our page on how we write our questions explains the approach.
Aim for steady scores well above your target on timed sets, not a single good result.
The last three days
- Three days out: take your last full timed set. Review every wrong answer and every guess, and add items to the confusion list.
- Two days out: reread the confusion list and the study guide’s bullets. Fix gaps in areas that are cheap to fix. Do not start new topics.
- The day before: light review only, 30 to 60 minutes. Check your booking, ID, and test setup, and read our exam day guide. Sleep matters more than another practice set.

FAQ
Can I pass SC-401 with only reading and practice questions?
It is possible, but hands-on time helps a great deal because the exam asks what to configure and where. Use a test tenant if you can.
Should I do the 4-week or 8-week plan?
If you can already explain the difference between a sensitivity label and a retention label and have built a DLP policy, the 4-week plan can work. If not, take the 8-week plan.
When should I book the exam?
Book once timed practice scores are steadily above your target. Booking early can motivate you, but a date you cannot move has a cost; check Microsoft’s rescheduling rules first.
