The short version
SC-401 is worth it if you administer, or want to administer, data protection in Microsoft 365 and your employer or clients use Microsoft Purview. It is a poor fit if your work never touches Microsoft 365 or if you only want a general security credential. Microsoft publishes no pass rate, salary, or job-count data for it, so this page sticks to what the credential shows and what it costs you in effort.
What the credential shows
Passing earns the Microsoft Certified: Information Security Administrator Associate credential. Microsoft labels it intermediate level and aimed at the administrator role. The role, in Microsoft’s words, plans and implements information security of sensitive data with Microsoft Purview and related services, including protecting data used by AI services.
In plain terms, the credential says you were able to pick and configure the right control for a business need: sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, retention, Insider Risk Management, audit and alerts, and AI-related data controls. Because the exam is scenario based, it shows more than memorized names. It shows you can choose between look-alike features under a stated constraint.
Who benefits most
- Microsoft 365 administrators who are asked to “sort out data protection”. The exam gives you a map of Purview that you may not build on your own.
- Security and compliance analysts who work in Purview and the Defender portal and want a structured path through areas they touch only occasionally.
- Consultants and managed service staff who set up Purview for several organizations. A recognized exam name is easy to explain to a client.
- People preparing for a role change from general IT administration to security or compliance work.
- Teams facing an AI rollout. Protecting data used by AI services is its own area in the current outline. If your organization is adopting Copilot-style tools, those skills have an immediate use.
Who can skip it
- If your work uses another cloud or another data protection product and Microsoft 365 is not part of it, the product knowledge will not transfer much.
- If you are brand new to IT, this is a heavy first step. A general fundamentals exam or hands-on practice is a calmer start.
- If you need a general, vendor-neutral security credential, an exam of that kind fits better. This one is Microsoft-specific by design.
- If you already do this work daily and nobody asks for a credential, the exam may add little beyond a document that says so.
What it does not prove
A passed exam does not prove you can run a Purview program. Writing policies that people can live with, handling false positives, getting business owners to agree on classification, and talking to legal teams are skills the exam only touches. Employers who care about those will ask about projects, not scores.
It also does not stay current by itself. Purview changes quickly, which is why Microsoft expires the credential after one year.
Effort versus benefit
The honest cost has three parts.
Study time. It varies a lot. People who configure Purview every week may need a few weeks of focused review of the gaps. People who know Microsoft 365 but have not used Purview should plan for a longer stretch with a test tenant. The study plan page gives 4-week and 8-week schedules with hour ranges.
The exam itself. There is a fee that depends on the country, and a retake costs again. Microsoft gives no figure on its pages, so check the amount when you book. See also the certification costs overview.
The yearly upkeep. Associate credentials expire after a year. Renewal is free and online, but it is still a task each year. If you will not use Purview a year from now, think about whether the yearly renewal is worth your attention. The renewal and retakes page explains how it works.
On the benefit side, the main gain is often the learning itself. Studying forces you to see how classification, labels, DLP, retention, and insider risk fit together, which makes day-to-day decisions easier.
Alternatives and neighbors
Microsoft offers other security exams in the same family. They focus on different jobs, such as security operations or identity. If your job is investigating incidents in the Defender portal, an operations-focused exam may suit you better than a data protection one. If your focus is access and identity, look at the identity-focused credentials instead. Read each exam page for its audience profile and compare it with your actual duties.
Hands-on practice in a test tenant is a free alternative to studying with an exam in mind, and it is useful even if you never book the exam.
When to take it, and when to wait
Take it when:
- You have used the Purview portal and can name what the three domains cover.
- Your job or your next job involves data protection in Microsoft 365.
- You can set aside several weeks of steady study.
Wait when:
- You have never opened Purview. Spend a few weeks in a test tenant first.
- The skills outline just changed. The study guide dated October 28, 2026 now applies to the English exam, and the localized versions follow about eight weeks later. Check which outline applies to your exam date and language.
- You cannot study for weeks in a row. This exam rewards steady practice, not a weekend of cramming.

If you are still deciding, read how hard the exam is on the difficulty page and what it assumes you know on the prerequisites page. The full list of domains is on the SC-401 overview. When you want to test yourself before you commit, the SC-401 practice exams show your score by domain.
FAQ
Is SC-401 good for beginners?
Not as a first exam. Microsoft expects familiarity with Microsoft 365 services, PowerShell, Microsoft Entra, and the Defender portal.
Does SC-401 lead to a higher-level credential?
Microsoft’s pages we read do not name one. It is a stand-alone associate credential.
Will SC-401 get me a job?
We cannot promise that, and Microsoft publishes no job data for it. The credential helps most when it matches work you do or want to do.
Is the credential permanent?
No. It expires after one year unless you renew it with Microsoft’s free online assessment.
