The short version
Microsoft lists no required certification or course for SC-401, on the pages we checked. It does state what you should be familiar with: all Microsoft 365 services, PowerShell, Microsoft Entra, the Microsoft Defender portal, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps. That is a high bar for a first Microsoft exam, so use the checklist below to see where you stand.
Required versus recommended
Required. The certification page and study guide we checked do not list a prerequisite exam or certification. You can book SC-401 without holding another credential.
Recommended. The audience profile says an information security administrator should be familiar with the services above. Microsoft also describes the role as one that works with governance, data, and security teams and takes part in responding to incidents. That means comfort with business requirements, not only with portals.
We have not seen Microsoft name a specific earlier certification as the step before SC-401, so we do not recommend one as a rule. If you are new to Microsoft security concepts, a fundamentals-level exam can give you vocabulary, but that is a choice, not a requirement.
What to know before you start
Microsoft 365 basics. What Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams are, how sites, mailboxes, and groups relate, and how licensing unlocks features.
Identity basics. Users, groups, administrative units, roles, and how Microsoft Entra ties them together. Purview role groups and permissions are a recurring theme.
Portals. Where to find the Microsoft Purview portal, the Microsoft Defender portal, and the admin center, and how each is used.
PowerShell basics. Connecting to a service and running a cmdlet. You do not need to write scripts, but you should understand why an administrator would use PowerShell for a task.
Security and compliance ideas. Data classification, least privilege, encryption, retention, regulatory requirements in general, and the difference between prevention, detection, and investigation.
Skills self-check
Rate each statement as yes, partly, or no. A “no” is a study topic, not a verdict.
Information protection
- I can explain the difference between a sensitive info type, a trainable classifier, document fingerprinting, and exact data match.
- I know what a sensitivity label can control, such as encryption and content marking, and that labels can apply to containers.
- I know what a publishing policy and an auto-labeling policy do.
- I can say what the Information Protection client and the scanner are for.
Data loss prevention and retention
- I can describe the locations a DLP policy can cover and what actions a rule can take.
- I know why a device must be onboarded for Endpoint DLP.
- I can explain the difference between a retention label and a retention policy.
- I know what an adaptive scope is.
Risks, alerts, and activities
- I can explain what Insider Risk Management does and what a policy template is.
- I know where to search audit logs and how that differs from Activity explorer.
- I know what eDiscovery is used for.
- I have heard of DSPM for AI and can say why it exists.
General
- I have used the Purview or Defender portal in real work or in a test tenant.
- I can read a scenario and spot the one requirement that decides the answer.
How to read your result
- Mostly yes: you are ready to start the 4-week plan on the study plan page.
- A mix: use the 8-week plan and start with the areas where you answered no.
- Mostly no: spend time on Microsoft 365 administration first, then return. Our guide to how to study for IT certification exams helps you structure it.
Getting hands-on practice
Reading helps, but seeing settings helps more. Check Microsoft’s current terms for trial or developer tenants, because what they include changes. Some Purview features need specific licenses, so you may only be able to read about them. Microsoft’s certification page links a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox, and the study guide points to Microsoft Learn training.

FAQ
Do I need another Microsoft certification first?
On the pages we checked, Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification for SC-401.
Do I need to be a programmer?
No. PowerShell familiarity helps, but this is an administration exam, not a development exam.
Can I take SC-401 with no IT job?
Yes, nothing prevents it. Candidates without work experience should plan more study time and use a test tenant for practice.
