The short version
You get 100 minutes to complete SC-401, and you need a scaled score of 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000 to pass. Microsoft does not publish the number of questions. The exam is proctored, scheduled through Pearson VUE, and open to a limited set of resources: on role-based exams like this one, Microsoft Learn is available during the exam.
Time and number of questions
Microsoft’s certification page says you have 100 minutes to complete SC-401. Microsoft’s general exam-duration page separates exam time from seat time. For associate and expert exams without labs, that page lists 100 minutes of exam time and 120 minutes of seat time. Seat time includes reading the instructions, accepting the candidate agreement, and leaving comments at the end. When you register, Microsoft shows the exam time that applies to your booking.
The number of questions is not published for SC-401. Microsoft says most of its exams have between 40 and 60 questions, that the count can vary, and that it can change as the exam is updated. Do not plan around a fixed count. Plan around a pace: if you treat 50 questions as a rough guide, that is about two minutes each, which is plenty for a short question and tight for a long scenario.
Passing score and scoring
Microsoft reports results on a scale of 1 to 1000, and 700 or higher passes. That is not 70 percent. A scaled score adjusts for differences between versions of the exam, so you cannot convert it into a number of correct answers. Be careful with any website that claims a conversion.
Other points from Microsoft’s scoring page:
- Some questions can give partial credit.
- There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.
- Some items may not be scored.
- Your score report shows how you did by skill area, which helps if you need to retake.
Question types
Microsoft does not say in advance which question types a given exam uses. It lists the types you may meet on exams in general: multiple choice, drag and drop, hot area, build list, active screen, case studies, and labs. For SC-401, the certification page says “you may have interactive components to complete”, so expect more than plain multiple choice.
The best way to see them is Microsoft’s free exam sandbox, which uses the same interface as the real exam and lets you try each type. Spend ten minutes there before exam day so that nothing about the interface surprises you.
Case studies, when they appear, give you a company background that you read once and use for several questions. Read the requirements before the questions, and note the constraints, such as “must use Defender for Cloud Apps” or “must not require administrator involvement”. These constraints usually decide the answer. Our guide to exam question types explains how to approach each format.
Breaks and review
Microsoft allows unscheduled breaks. Five minutes of break time are built into the exam time, but the clock keeps running while you are on a break, and you can take as long as you like. Once you start a break, you cannot go back to questions you saw before it, even if they are unanswered or marked for review. Answer and review first, then break. You cannot take a break in the middle of a lab or a problem-solution question set.
Using Microsoft Learn during the exam
On associate and expert exams, you can open Microsoft Learn in a split screen. You can browse the learn.microsoft.com site, except Q&A, practice assessments, and your profile. Extra time is not added, and the timer keeps running. Microsoft says the resource is for questions where you might need to look up a detail and that using it for every question will leave you without enough time.
The practical lesson: know the main concepts cold, and treat Learn as a way to confirm a setting name or a limit, not as a study aid. Knowing where a topic lives in the Purview documentation can save you a minute, but searching a page costs more than recalling the answer.
Languages and delivery
Microsoft lists these languages: English, Portuguese (Brazil), French, German, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), and Spanish. Localized exams are updated about eight weeks after the English version. If your language is not available, you can request 30 extra minutes.
The exam is proctored and scheduled through Pearson VUE. The pages we checked do not say which delivery options exist for SC-401, so confirm at booking whether you can test at a center or online. Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account, because records tied to an organizational account can be lost if you leave the organization.
If you use assistive devices or need extra time, Microsoft has an accommodations request process, and you must make the request before registering.
Retakes and renewal
If you fail, you can retake the exam after 24 hours. After that, you wait 14 days between further attempts. You can take an exam at most five times in 12 months from your first attempt. You cannot retake an exam you have passed unless the certification has expired. Microsoft says a waiver of the waiting period is possible only after an internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number.
The associate certification expires after a year unless renewed. Renewal is free: you pass an unproctored, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window before the expiration date, and the certification extends by one year. There is no limit to renewal attempts as long as you pass before it expires.

Next step
Now turn the format into a schedule with the study plan. When you want timed practice, the SC-401 practice exams include sets of 100 questions with a mix of single-answer and multi-select items.
FAQ
Is 700 the same as 70 percent?
No. Microsoft’s scale runs from 1 to 1000 and the score is scaled, so 700 does not correspond to a fixed percentage of correct answers.
Can I use notes during the exam?
No. The only resource Microsoft allows is Microsoft Learn inside the exam window.
What if I run out of time on a break?
The clock does not stop. If time ends while you are on a break, the exam is scored on what you finished.
How long should I leave between attempts?
Microsoft requires 24 hours after the first failed attempt and 14 days after each later one. Use that time to study the domains on your score report.
