The short version
The credential you earn with DP-750 is an associate-level Microsoft certification, and those are valid for one year. You keep it alive by passing a free, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn during the six months before it expires. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second try and 14 days between later tries, with at most five attempts in 12 months.
This page goes deeper than the retake paragraph on the exam format page. It covers the whole life of the credential, not just the first attempt.
Does the DP-750 credential expire?
Yes. Microsoft states that role-based certifications at associate and expert level, plus specialty certifications, are valid for one year from the date you complete all the requirements. The DP-750 study guide repeats this in its list of useful links: associate certifications expire annually and can be renewed for free.
Fundamentals certifications are the exception. Microsoft says they do not expire. DP-750 is not a fundamentals exam, so plan for the one-year clock.
This page relies on Microsoft’s general policies and the DP-750 study guide. Check your own Microsoft Learn profile for the exact expiration date, because that date is the one that counts.
How renewal works
Renewal is a short assessment, not a second full exam. These are the rules Microsoft publishes:
- It is free. There is no fee to renew an associate, expert, or specialty certification.
- The window is six months. The assessment is not available earlier than six months before expiry. Expiration dates and times are in UTC, so do not leave it to the last evening.
- It is unproctored and open book. You take it online through Microsoft Learn, and you can look things up.
- It is shorter. Microsoft says renewal assessments focus on recent updates and take about 45 minutes.
- You can retry. There is no limit on renewal attempts. After a failed first try you can retry immediately. After the second try you wait at least 24 hours between attempts.
- Passing extends the credential by one year from the old expiration date. You do not lose the months you had left by renewing early.
- It is the only path. Retaking the exam early or passing a beta exam does not renew a credential. Microsoft says there are no exceptions.
To start, sign in to your Microsoft Learn profile, open Certifications, and look for the Renew button. If you agreed to Microsoft’s communication terms and your profile has an email address, Microsoft sends a reminder when you become eligible.
What happens if the credential lapses?
Once a role-based certification expires, Microsoft says you can no longer renew it. You must earn it again by passing the required exam. In the DP-750 case, that means sitting the full exam again, and the normal retake rules apply, including the fee where one applies.
That is why the six-month window matters. A free 45-minute assessment is a much smaller job than a full exam. Microsoft’s own advice is to take the renewal well before the deadline, in case of illness, technical trouble, or several attempts.
Retake rules for the DP-750 exam
Microsoft’s retake policy for role-based exams says:
- If you do not pass, wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
- Between all later attempts, wait 14 days, up to a total of five attempts.
- You cannot take the same exam more than five times within 12 months of your first attempt. After five failures you can try again 12 months after the date of the first attempt.
- You cannot retake an exam you have already passed, unless your certification has expired.
- Where a fee applies, you pay it again for every attempt.
A waiver of the waiting period exists only if you had an internet connection problem or equipment failure during the exam and Pearson VUE created a case. You must include the case number. No other reason qualifies.
What if the exam changes or is retired?
Microsoft updates the skills measured for its exams from time to time. The DP-750 study guide you can read today is titled “Skills measured as of October 19, 2026”, and its change log marks two sub-areas as “Minor” changes. Localized versions are updated about eight weeks after English.
Microsoft also reserves the right to retire exams and certifications at any time. A retired credential cannot be earned by new candidates. It stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires, or for two years after retirement if it has no expiration date. Renewal reminders for a retiring certification are suppressed, and the renewal window can be shortened, so watch the “renew by” date on Learn. We found no retirement date for DP-750.
A timeline example
These dates are invented to show the mechanics.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| March 3, 2027 | You pass DP-750. The credential is valid for one year. |
| September 3, 2027 | The six-month renewal window opens. |
| October 2027 | You pass the free renewal assessment. |
| March 3, 2028 | The old expiration date. Because you renewed, the credential now runs one year beyond this date. |
| March 3, 2029 | The new expiration date, so the next window opens September 3, 2028. |
If you had missed the window and March 3, 2028 had passed, you would have to pass the full exam again.
What to do with this
Put the expiry date in your calendar the day you pass, and a second reminder for the day the window opens. Keep your Learn skills fresh by reading release notes for Azure Databricks, since the renewal assessment concentrates on recent changes.
If you are still preparing for the first attempt, the study plan and prerequisites page are better places to start.
