Is DP-750 Hard? An Honest Difficulty Check

The short version

DP-750 is a demanding associate exam. It is easier if you build pipelines on Databricks daily, and much harder if you have only read about the platform. Microsoft publishes no pass rate for it, so any number you see online is a guess. Judge it by your own hands-on time and your practice results.

What makes it difficult

It is wide. The skills measured span compute, Unity Catalog security and governance, ingestion, transformation, data quality, jobs, Git, bundles, and tuning. Few people use all of that every week.

It is scenario-based. Questions describe a situation with several constraints and ask for the best choice. Several options may be technically possible. One requirement, such as cost, latency, or access isolation, decides.

It mixes SQL, Python, and settings. You need to read a MERGE, a PySpark transformation, and a job configuration, sometimes in one question.

Neighbouring features look alike. Standard versus dedicated access mode, streaming tables versus materialized views, COPY INTO versus Auto Loader, and row filters versus column masks are the kind of pairs the exam builds questions around.

The time pressure is real. Microsoft’s DP-750 certification page gives 120 minutes, and the question count is unpublished. Long scenarios eat time.

Who finds it easier

  • Data engineers with a few months of daily work on Databricks, Unity Catalog, and Lakeflow Jobs.
  • People who earlier worked with Spark and Delta Lake on another platform and have since moved to Azure Databricks.
  • Candidates who have already built a bundle deployment and read a Spark UI.

Who finds it harder

  • SQL analysts with little Python or Spark exposure.
  • Azure administrators who know the cloud side but have not built pipelines.
  • Anyone who used an older approach (for example, only notebooks and a hand-built scheduler) and has not touched Unity Catalog governance, declarative pipelines, or bundles.
  • Candidates who have only watched videos and never run the features.

Common reasons people fail

  1. Skipping the governance domain. Privilege inheritance, row filters, column masks, and tags are easy points once you have tried them, and costly if you have not.
  2. Learning features, not decisions. Memorizing what a feature does is not enough. You must know when it is the wrong choice.
  3. Neglecting operations. Repairs, restarts, queue-or-skip settings, and Spark UI diagnosis make up a large part of the biggest domain.
  4. Out-of-date material. Databricks product names evolve, and Microsoft’s outline uses Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines and Declarative Automation Bundles. Always check your material against the current skills outline.
  5. Running out of time. Reading every option in full before finding the deciding requirement costs minutes you do not have.

How to judge your readiness

Use practice exams as an indicator, not a promise. Microsoft reports scaled scores, so no practice percentage converts into a certain result. These checks are more useful:

  • You score consistently above your own target, with a margin, on full-length practice exams in all four domains, not only the strong ones.
  • You can explain why each wrong option is wrong, not just why the right one is right.
  • You finish a full-length set within the time with a few minutes to spare.
  • You have done every action in Microsoft’s skills list at least once in a workspace.

If one domain stays weak after two attempts, fix it before booking. A few extra days cost less than a retake, which needs a 24-hour wait and a new fee where one applies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the pass rate for DP-750?

Microsoft does not publish one for this exam, so treat any figure you find online with caution.

Is DP-750 harder than a fundamentals exam?

Yes. It is an associate exam that expects hands-on experience, while fundamentals exams test concepts.

Can I pass by only reading?

It is unlikely. The scenarios assume you have configured and troubleshot these features.
