AI-901 Prerequisites: What to Know First

The short version

AI-901 has no required prerequisite exam. Microsoft expects conceptual knowledge of AI solutions in Azure, foundational technical skills to work with them, some Python knowledge, and familiarity with Azure resources. You do not need a degree or job experience in AI. You do need to be comfortable reading short code.

Required versus recommended

Required. Microsoft’s exam page lists no prior certification or experience as a formal requirement, and the certification’s only required exam is AI-901 itself. You need a Microsoft account to schedule, and Microsoft recommends a personal account over a work or school account, because exam records tied to an organization can be lost if you leave it.

Recommended. From the audience profile in Microsoft’s study guide:

  • Conceptual knowledge of AI solutions in Azure.
  • Foundational technical skills to work with them.
  • Knowledge of Python syntax and programming techniques.
  • Familiarity with Azure resources.

The study guide adds that you should be familiar with REST APIs, SDKs, and CLIs. Microsoft’s linked course description also recommends core cloud concepts: cloud storage, cloud compute, and cloud-based authentication and authorization. Microsoft describes the course as useful for aspiring technology professionals at the beginning of their AI careers.

What to know before you start studying

Cloud basics

You should know what a subscription, a resource group, and a region are, and why a service runs in a particular region. You should have seen the Azure portal at least once.

Reading Python

You do not need to write large programs. You should read a short script that creates a client, sends a request, and prints a response. Know what a variable, a function call, a loop, and a dictionary or JSON object look like.

APIs and SDKs

Know the difference between calling a service through a REST API, using an SDK that wraps it, and using a command-line tool. Know why a call needs an endpoint and a credential.

AI ideas

A rough sense of what a language model is and what a prompt is helps. The study plan starts these from scratch, so this is not a barrier.

Skills self-check

Answer each with yes, mostly, or no. Aim for mostly yes on most of them.

  • I can explain the difference between a subscription and a resource group.
  • I can read a ten-line Python script and say what it does.
  • I know what an endpoint and an API key are for.
  • I can name the six responsible AI principles.
  • I can explain, in a sentence, what a token is.
  • I can say when I would pick a small model instead of a large one.
  • I have written a prompt and changed it to improve the answer.
  • I can describe what an agent is made of.
  • I can explain the difference between speech recognition and speech synthesis.
  • I know what text analysis can do with a paragraph.

If you answer no to three or more of the cloud, Python, and API items, spend a week there before starting the study plan.

Should you take another exam first?

Microsoft does not require one. AI-900 is no longer an option, because it retired on June 30, 2026, and the current credential requires AI-901. If you are new to cloud, you can look at Microsoft Learn’s introductory cloud material, but Microsoft lists no required order. If you plan to continue after this, you can browse our other practice exams.

Gaps and how to close them

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know machine learning math?

The current skills outline lists no machine learning math. Focus on the generative AI, agent, and Foundry topics instead.

Do I need an Azure subscription?

Microsoft does not require one to sit the exam. Hands-on practice is far easier with one, though.

Can a non-technical person pass?

Yes, with effort. Plan extra time for the code-reading and portal parts.
