AB-900 vs AI-901: Which Exam First?

The short version

Take AB-900 if you administer or secure Microsoft 365 and need to manage Copilot and agents. Take AI-901 if you want to build AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry and you can read Python. They cover different ground, so neither is a stepping stone to the other. Take both only if your job spans administration and AI development. If you cannot decide, ask what you do on Monday morning: manage a tenant, or write code that calls AI models.

What AB-900 covers

AB-900 is about running the platform that Copilot lives on. You identify core Microsoft 365 objects and admin centers, explain security ideas such as Zero Trust and Conditional Access, tell Microsoft Purview tools apart, and understand how oversharing turns into a Copilot risk. Then you cover the basic administrative tasks: licenses, billing models, usage monitoring, prompts, and agent access and approval.

What AI-901 covers

AI-901 is about understanding and using AI services. The first domain covers responsible AI principles, how generative models work, and choosing a model. The second is hands-on in spirit: prompts, deploying a model, building lightweight apps with the Foundry SDK, single-agent solutions, text and speech, computer vision and image generation, and information extraction with Content Understanding. Microsoft’s audience profile expects Python knowledge and familiarity with Azure resources.

Overlap and differences

The overlap is small and mostly in vocabulary:

  • Both mention agents, but from different sides. AB-900 asks how an admin grants access, approves, and monitors agents. AI-901 asks how a developer creates and tests an agent.
  • Both touch responsible AI. AB-900 lists responsible AI principles inside the Copilot data security topic; AI-901 gives them a full skill area.
  • Both expect you to know that AI features depend on data and permissions, but only AB-900 tests how permissions and protection tools control what Copilot can reach.

The differences are bigger. AB-900 lives in admin centers (Microsoft 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Entra, Purview, Power Platform). AI-901 lives in Foundry, SDKs, and code. Someone strong in one will still need real study for the other.

How to choose

  1. You manage users, licenses, or security: AB-900.
  2. You are a developer or data person exploring AI services: AI-901.
  3. You sit in between, for example a solutions architect: pick the one tied to your next project, then decide whether to add the other.
  4. You are a student with no direction yet: read both study guides and pick the one whose skills list you can already half-explain.
  5. Your employer is rolling out Copilot: AB-900 matches that work. If your employer is building custom AI apps on Azure, AI-901 fits.

If you plan both, order by relevance to your role, not difficulty. Both are beginner-level.

A note on AI-900

Microsoft’s AI-900 page shows that AI-900 retired on June 30, 2026 and was replaced by AI-901. If you find study material for AI-900, treat it as out of date for AI-901, because the new exam focuses on Foundry and a Python-based skill set.

Which is harder?

It depends on your background. Admins often find AI-901’s coding parts new, while developers often find AB-900’s admin centers and governance tools unfamiliar. See is AB-900 hard and is AI-901 hard for each exam on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need AB-900 before AI-901?

No. Microsoft lists no such requirement on either exam page.

Do I need AI-901 before AB-900?

No. AB-900 expects Microsoft 365 familiarity, not coding.

Do either of them expire?

No. Microsoft says fundamentals certifications do not expire.
