Is AI-901 Hard? An Honest Difficulty Check

The short version

AI-901 is an entry-level exam, but it is not a pure beginner quiz. Roughly half of it is about building things in Microsoft Foundry, and Microsoft expects some Python reading skills. People with Azure or coding experience often find it manageable. People who treat it as a vocabulary test often do not. We found no pass rate published by Microsoft for it, so anything below is judgment, not statistics.

What makes it easier than it sounds

  • The scope is narrow. There are two domains and seven skill areas. Microsoft’s study guide lists every area.
  • The verbs are mostly “describe” and “identify”. Many questions ask you to match a scenario to a concept or a service.
  • Hands-on tasks are small. The study guide says “lightweight” applications: a chat client, a single agent, a small speech or vision app.
  • Passing is 700 of 1,000, and Microsoft says there is no penalty for guessing.

What makes it harder than it sounds

  • It changed recently. AI-901 replaced AI-900 on June 30, 2026, and the topics shifted toward generative AI, agents, and Foundry. Older videos and notes can steer you wrong.
  • The tools move quickly. Product names and portal screens change. Study guide wording such as “Foundry Tools” may not match something you read a year ago. Check the date on every resource.
  • Close answers. Many options are real services or real concepts that sit next to the right one. Key phrases and entities, or batch and fast transcription, are the kind of pairs you must separate.
  • Code and configuration. Microsoft’s audience profile names Python syntax and programming techniques, and the study guide says to know REST APIs, SDKs, and CLIs.
  • No Microsoft Learn during the exam. Microsoft says fundamentals exams do not allow it.
  • Unknown format details. The number of questions and question types are not published for AI-901.

Who usually finds it easy

  • Developers or cloud engineers who have already called an AI API.
  • People who have used the Foundry portal for real work, even for a few weeks.
  • Candidates who passed another Microsoft fundamentals exam and know the style.

Who usually finds it hard

  • People new to cloud who have never opened the Azure portal.
  • People who have used chat assistants but never written code against a model.
  • Candidates studying from AI-900 material, who spend time on topics that are no longer measured.
  • Anyone who reads about Foundry but never deploys a model.

Common reasons people fail

  1. Skipping the hands-on half. Domain 2 is 55-60% of the exam, and portal and code questions are hard to answer from reading alone.
  2. Studying the wrong exam. Time spent on classic machine learning topics is time not spent on agents, prompts, and information extraction.
  3. Memorizing names instead of purposes. If you can recite service names but not say when to pick each, the scenarios will catch you.
  4. Weak spots hidden by a good average. A strong domain can mask a weak one, and Microsoft’s score report shows the bars by skill area.
  5. Rushing the first read of a scenario. One constraint, such as live versus stored audio or inferred versus copied text, often decides the answer.

How to judge your readiness

Do not rely on a feeling. Use evidence.

  • Score consistently above your target on practice exams, across several different sets and not just one you have seen. Our own practice sets use a stricter internal pass mark than Microsoft’s 700, to leave margin, but no practice score can promise a result.
  • Check each domain. If one area keeps lagging, fix it before booking.
  • Explain, without notes, why the wrong options in the questions you missed are wrong.
  • Complete the hands-on tasks in the study guide at least once: deploy a model, write a system prompt, build a small client, create an agent, and run an analyzer.
  • Run one full practice set in a single sitting and see if your focus holds.

If you cannot do these yet, wait a week or two. If you do fail, you can retake after 24 hours, then after 14 days for later attempts. Your score report shows which areas to study. See the exam format page for the rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI-901 harder than AI-900 was?

We cannot say for certain. It asks you to do more hands-on work, and it covers generative AI and agents. We found no comparison from Microsoft.

Can I pass without coding experience?

Many people can, but you should practice reading short Python snippets and make sure you know what an SDK and a REST API are.

How long should I study?

It varies a lot. As a rough guide, 25 to 35 hours spread over four to eight weeks suits many people, with fewer if you already know Azure AI.
