The short version
Take AZ-900 first if you are new to cloud and Azure. Take AI-901 first, or only AI-901, if your goal is working with AI and you already understand basic cloud ideas. Take both if you want the full picture: AZ-900 teaches the platform, and AI-901 teaches what you build on it. Neither is a prerequisite for the other on the Microsoft pages we checked on October 22, 2026.

What each exam is really about
AZ-900 is a map of Azure. You learn what the cloud is, how Azure is organized (regions, subscriptions, resource groups), what the main compute, networking, storage, and identity services do, and how cost, governance, tooling, and monitoring work. It is mostly recognition and choosing between neighbors.
AI-901 is about AI on Azure. The first domain covers AI concepts: responsible AI principles, how generative models work, choosing models, and workloads such as text analysis, speech, vision, and information extraction. The second, larger domain is practical: prompts, deploying and chatting with a model in Microsoft Foundry, a lightweight client built with the Foundry SDK, a single agent, and extraction with Azure Content Understanding. You do not write a program from scratch in the exam, but you need to read short code.
Where they overlap
- Both are fundamentals-level Microsoft exams with the same scoring scale and pass mark.
- Both use the same retake rule: 24 hours after a first failure, then 14 days between attempts, five attempts in 12 months.
- Both expect some familiarity with Azure. AI-901 says you should be familiar with Azure resources, and its course description recommends knowledge of cloud storage, compute, and authentication and authorization. Those are AZ-900 topics.
- Both are offered in 13 languages, with localized versions about eight weeks after English.
Where they differ
- Depth of doing. AZ-900 is conceptual. About half of AI-901 is about implementing things.
- Coding. AZ-900 needs none. AI-901 names Python and says you should be familiar with REST APIs, SDKs, and CLIs.
- Breadth. AZ-900 spans the whole platform in shallow layers. AI-901 goes into a narrower area in a more hands-on way.
- Change history. AI-901 replaced AI-900, which Microsoft retired on June 30, 2026. Material for AI-900 can send you to the wrong topics. AZ-900’s July 2026 change was minor.
How to choose
| If you are… | Start with |
|---|---|
| New to IT or cloud | AZ-900 |
| An IT professional who needs Azure vocabulary | AZ-900 |
| A developer who wants to work with AI services | AI-901, after a quick look at AZ-900 topics |
| A manager or analyst who talks to cloud teams | AZ-900 |
| Aiming for an AI engineering path | AI-901, with some Python practice |
| Unsure | AZ-900: it is the broader base |
If you take both, a sensible order is AZ-900 first, then AI-901, because AI-901 assumes you know cloud storage, compute, and sign-in ideas. Allow separate study time for each: the topics do not overlap much beyond that shared base.
Which is harder?
For most people with no coding background, AI-901 asks more because of the Python reading and the build steps. For most developers with no cloud background, AZ-900 asks more because of the number of Azure names. Neither is a quick pass for someone who skips studying. Frequently asked questions
Do I need AZ-900 before AI-901?
No. The AI-901 pages we checked do not list it as a requirement. It does recommend knowing core cloud concepts.
Is AI-901 the new AI-900?
Yes, in effect. Microsoft says AI-900 retired on June 30, 2026, and AI-901 replaces it for the Azure AI Fundamentals credential.
Do either of them expire?
No. Microsoft says fundamentals certifications do not expire.
