AB-731 Study Plan: 4-Week and 8-Week

The short version

Most business-side candidates need roughly 20 to 35 hours in total, spread over four to eight weeks. Split your time roughly as the exam does: about 40% on generative AI value, 40% on Microsoft’s AI apps and services, and 20% on adoption and responsible AI. These hours are our estimate, not a Microsoft figure, and your background changes them a lot.

Before you start

Open the Microsoft Learn AB-731 study guide and keep it beside you. This plan follows the version titled “Skills measured as of July 22, 2026”. If you can, get access to Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Chat so you have seen the interface. Looking is enough; the exam does not ask you to build anything.

Keep one comparison table with a row per product or idea that people confuse: Microsoft 365 Copilot versus Copilot Chat, Copilot Studio versus the other ways to build agents, RAG versus fine-tuning, pay-as-you-go versus commitment tiers. For each row write what it is for, what it is not for, and the one detail in a scenario that points to it. Our how to study guide has more on note-taking and spacing.

The 4-week plan (about 6 to 9 hours per week)

Week 1: Generative AI foundations. Generative AI versus other AI, pretrained versus fine-tuned models, tokens and cost drivers, return on investment, and the risks: fabrications, reliability, bias. Add prompt engineering techniques and what grounding means. About 7 hours. End with a short self-quiz on definitions.

Week 2: RAG, data, machine learning, and Copilot. Retrieval-augmented generation, data quality and representative datasets, security of AI systems, when machine learning adds value, and the machine learning lifecycle. Then start Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat: versions, apps, Microsoft Graph. About 8 hours.

Week 3: Copilot Studio, extensibility, and Foundry Tools. Copilot Studio, Researcher and Analyst, build-buy-extend decisions, then Foundry Tools: Azure Vision in Foundry Tools, Azure AI Search, Microsoft Foundry, and matching a model to a need. About 9 hours. This is the heaviest week because product look-alikes live here.

Week 4: Adoption, then review. Responsible AI principles, governance, an AI council, an adoption team, barriers, champions, impacts on data, security, privacy, and cost, Copilot license types, and Foundry Tools subscription models. About 7 hours, with the last two sessions spent on weak spots.

The 8-week plan (about 3 to 5 hours per week)

WeekFocus
1What generative AI is, how it differs from other AI, pretrained versus fine-tuned models
2Tokens, cost drivers, ROI, fabrications, reliability, bias; when AI adds business value
3Prompt engineering, grounding, RAG, data quality, secure AI; machine learning use cases and lifecycle
4Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat: versions, apps, Graph, mapping use cases
5Copilot Studio, Researcher and Analyst, build/buy/extend; then Foundry Tools and model selection
6Responsible AI principles, governance, AI council
7Adoption team, barriers, champions, data/security/privacy/cost impacts, license and subscription models
8Full review, weak spots, timed practice

The slower pace suits people who work full time or who have not worked with Microsoft 365 administration or Azure terms before.

How to use practice exams

  1. Early check (week 1 or 2): take one short set cold. Do not worry about the score. You are looking for the weak area.
  2. After each skill area: answer questions on that area only and read every explanation, including for options you did not pick.
  3. Two weeks out: take a full-length timed set in one sitting.
  4. Final week: repeat full sets until your scores stay consistently above your target. One lucky result proves little.

Practice exams measure readiness. They do not replace the Microsoft Learn material or the free practice assessment Microsoft offers for this exam. Our practice tests are original questions, so they will not match the real exam wording, and that is on purpose. Read how we write our questions if you are curious.

The last 3 days

  • Three days out: one full timed practice set. Review every miss and write one line per miss in your comparison table.
  • Two days out: reread only the confused pairs: RAG versus fine-tuning, Copilot versus Copilot Chat, pay-as-you-go versus commitment tiers, adoption team versus AI champions.
  • The day before: light review for 30 to 45 minutes. Check your ID, your booking, and, for an online exam, your room and computer. Sleep.

On the day, read our exam day guide. You get 45 minutes, so keep a steady pace and answer every question. Microsoft does not deduct points for wrong answers.

Watch product names

Microsoft renames AI products often. The current guide uses Foundry Tools and Microsoft Foundry. If your study material uses older names, map them in your notes so a renamed option does not throw you in the exam.

Next step

Go through domains explained while you follow the plan, and use the AB-731 practice tests at the checkpoints above.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours do I need?

Many business candidates land between 20 and 35 hours, but this varies. People who already advise on Microsoft 365 Copilot may need less.

Should I do hands-on labs?

Seeing Copilot and Foundry in action helps you remember what each does, but the exam tests judgment more than clicking.

Is a 4-week plan enough?

It works if you can give 6 to 9 hours a week. Otherwise choose the 8-week plan.
