The short version
SAP-C03 is worth it if you design multi-account AWS architectures and want a credential that shows that level of judgment. It is probably not worth it if you are new to AWS or if you only need to prove basics. It measures design knowledge, not hands-on delivery, so treat it as one signal among several.
What the credential shows
AWS describes the exam for experienced architects who guide work across several applications and projects in complex, multi-account environments. Target roles include solutions architects, cloud architects, infrastructure architects and technical leads. AWS recommends two or more years of hands-on experience designing and implementing cloud solutions.
So a pass tells a reader that you can weigh trade-offs between designs: cost, resilience, security and operations. It is a Professional-level exam, one step above the Associate level.
Who benefits most
- Working architects who already make multi-account decisions and want a recognized checkpoint.
- Consultants and partner staff, because clients and employers often ask for a named AWS credential. Check your own employer’s or partner program’s rules, since they differ.
- Engineers moving toward design roles who have the experience but not the title.
- People who learn best with a deadline. Preparing forces you through the whole portfolio of services, including the ones you never touch at work.
Who can skip it
- Beginners. Without real AWS experience, the long scenario questions are slow and frustrating. Start lower and build experience first. The prerequisites page has a self-check.
- Specialists in one narrow area. If you only work with networking or security, a Specialty exam may match your job better. AWS offers those at the Specialty level.
- People whose employer does not care. Skills you can show in a project may count for more than a badge.
What it does not prove
- That you can build and operate a system under pressure. A multiple-choice exam does not test your hands.
- That you know your own company’s setup.
- That your knowledge stays current. The credential is valid for three years, and the exam changes. SAP-C03 adds topics such as generative AI design with Amazon Bedrock, resilience engineering and post-quantum cryptography in AWS KMS. Check the exam guide for how much each counts.
We do not quote salary or pass-rate figures here. AWS does not publish them on the pages we checked, and numbers from other sources are hard to trust.
Effort against benefit
Effort varies a lot. People with daily multi-account experience often need fewer weeks than people who know only a few services. Our study plan shows 4-week and 8-week routes, and the difficulty page explains why people struggle. Also count the money and the renewal: the credential needs renewing every three years, either by passing the latest version or by maintaining it with a Skill Builder subscription. See renewal and retakes.
Neighboring exams
- Associate-level architect exam: a good first step if Professional feels too far.
- DevOps Engineer Professional (DOP-C02): AWS aims it at people who provision, operate and manage distributed applications, and recommends two or more years in that work. Pick it if your day job is delivery pipelines rather than design.
- Specialty exams: choose one when you need depth in a single area.
When to take it, and when to wait
AWS retires SAP-C02 on November 16, 2026, and SAP-C03 delivery begins November 17, 2026. Registration opened October 27, 2026, the day AWS published the exam guide.
- Take SAP-C02 now only if you are already prepared and need the credential quickly. Per AWS, it stays active through its original expiration date.
- Wait for SAP-C03 if you want your credential to cover cloud-native, generative AI and resilience skills, which is how AWS puts it.
The exam guide, published October 27, 2026, weights the domains 25%, 25%, 15%, 15% and 20%. If you are unsure, read it before you commit.
