Is the SAP-C03 Exam Hard? An Honest Look

The short version

Yes, SAP-C03 is a hard exam, and AWS places it at Professional level. The difficulty is less about memorizing facts and more about reading long scenarios and choosing between several designs that all seem to work. SAP-C03 is new, so there is no pass-rate data, and AWS does not publish one for any exam. Any claim about how many people pass it is a guess.

What makes it hard

Length and reading load. You get 75 questions in 180 minutes. Each question usually describes a company, its current setup and a list of requirements. Reading carefully takes time, and rushing is how you miss the one clause that decides the answer.

Several right-looking answers. In many questions, two or three options would actually work. The exam asks for the best one under constraints such as lowest operational overhead, most cost-effective, or smallest change. You need to know why the second-best option loses.

Breadth. AWS recommends two or more years of experience designing and implementing cloud solutions, and the exam covers networking, security, data, containers, serverless, migration and operations in one sitting.

New topics. SAP-C03 adds generative AI and agentic AI design, resilience engineering, service mesh options, lakehouse designs and post-quantum cryptography in KMS, according to AWS. If you studied for SAP-C02, parts of this will be unfamiliar.

Stamina. Three hours of concentrated reading is tiring, and AWS does not schedule breaks. The timer keeps running if you step out.

Who tends to find it more manageable

  • Architects who design multi-account AWS environments as part of their job.
  • People who already hold an Associate-level architecture certification and have kept building afterward.
  • Consultants who compare options for different customers every week.
  • Candidates who have used the services in the new domains, not only read about them.

Who tends to find it harder

  • People who learned AWS mostly from videos and never operated a multi-account setup.
  • Candidates strong in one area, for example networking, but thin in data, security or operations.
  • Anyone who relies on memorized answers. Questions change their details, and memorized answers fail then.
  • Test takers who read quickly and skim the requirements.

Common reasons people fall short

These are general patterns reported for professional-level cloud exams, not statistics for SAP-C03.

  1. Running out of time on long questions and guessing on the last ones.
  2. Choosing the technically strongest design when the question asked for the cheapest or the simplest.
  3. Mixing up services that sound alike, such as VPC Lattice and Transit Gateway, or SCPs and resource control policies.
  4. Skipping the multi-select instruction and picking one answer instead of two.
  5. Not allowing for the new areas, because the study material was written for the old exam.

How to judge your readiness

No score guarantees a pass, and a practice score is not a prediction of your exam score, because the exam uses scaled scoring. Still, you can look for these signs.

  • You score consistently above your own target on several different full-length practice sets, not just one lucky run. We suggest setting that target well above the passing mark, for example 80 percent or higher on realistic sets.
  • Your scores are balanced. No domain sits far below the others.
  • You can explain, out loud, why each wrong option in a question you missed fails.
  • You finish a timed 75-question set with 20 minutes or more to spare for review.
  • You have built something real in each of the five domains.

If any of these is missing, a few more weeks of study is cheaper than a second attempt. AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days after a failed attempt and charges the full fee again.

A note on timing

AWS published the SAP-C03 exam guide on October 27, 2026, and delivery starts on November 17, 2026. If you are close to ready on the old material, you may take SAP-C02 until November 16, 2026. If you are early in your preparation, study for SAP-C03 directly.

Next step

Check your background against the prerequisites page, and take a baseline with the SAP-C03 practice tests to see which domains need work. Practice exams measure readiness. They do not replace AWS’s documentation or hands-on work.

Frequently asked questions

Is SAP-C03 harder than SAP-C02?

AWS has not compared them, and there is no data yet. The new topics widen the scope, so people with only old material will find gaps.

Can I pass without hands-on experience?

Some people do, but the scenario style rewards experience. Build labs in every domain.

What if I fail?

You can retake after 14 calendar days. AWS sets no limit on attempts, and each attempt costs the full fee.
