Spark Associate Renewal and Retakes

The short version

The Databricks Spark Associate Developer credential is valid for two years from the award date. To keep it, you recertify by taking the full exam that is live at that time. If you fail an attempt, you wait 14 days and can try again as often as you like. Databricks does not publish what happens to a lapsed credential, so we say so below instead of guessing.

Does the credential expire?

Yes. The Databricks exam page and the exam guide both give the validity as 2 years. The certification FAQ adds that the period runs from the award date, and that the digital badge also expires two years after it is awarded. The exam guide says recertification is required every two years.

So a credential awarded on March 10, 2027 would reach its two-year mark in March 2029. That date is an example we built from the published rule, not a date taken from a Databricks page.

How renewal works

There is no shortcut and no lighter renewal exam in the published material. Databricks says you recertify by taking the full, current live exam. Three consequences follow:

  • You take the same kind of exam again. It has 45 scored multiple-choice questions and a 90-minute limit, with no test aids.
  • You are tested on the version that is live then. Databricks says each exam will have only one version going forward, and the exam guide is the authoritative list of topics. A renewal in 2029 may not match the outline you studied in 2027.
  • A renewal attempt is a normal attempt. The FAQ says every attempt costs the same as the original exam. We do not print fees; the Databricks exam page shows the current one.

Databricks says it notifies you ahead of expiry so you have time to prepare. It does not state how far ahead. Do not rely on the email alone. Put the expiry date in your calendar when you receive the badge, and set a reminder for several months earlier.

What happens if it lapses?

Databricks does not publish a grace period, a late-renewal fee, or a rule for lapsed credentials on the pages we checked. We do not know whether a lapsed holder can still show the badge, and we will not guess. If you are close to the date, ask Databricks support through your Webassessor account before you plan around a gap. The safest plan is to sit the renewal exam well before the two-year mark.

Retakes after a failed attempt

The rules are short:

  • You wait 14 days between attempts.
  • There is no limit on the number of attempts.
  • Each attempt costs the same as the first one.
  • Databricks says it does not issue free retakes or retake vouchers.

Because the passing score is not published, a failed attempt gives you little detail. According to the FAQ, you see unofficial results right after the exam. We found no mention of a per-domain report. Write down which topics felt shaky while the memory is fresh.

Use the 14 days on the domains that cost you time. A workable pattern:

  1. Days 1-2: list the questions you guessed on, by domain.
  2. Days 3-9: rebuild those topics in a notebook, one small exercise each.
  3. Days 10-12: take a fresh timed practice set.
  4. Days 13-14: light review, then rebook.

Rebooking early is fine, as long as you respect the wait. Rescheduling has its own deadlines: more than 24 hours ahead for an online exam and more than 72 hours for a test center, according to the FAQ. The exam format page covers delivery and rescheduling.

What if the exam changes?

Exams change. The Databricks exam guide for this certification now carries an “Exam Published” and “Exam Guide Updated” date of October 8, 2026, and it asks you to check the guide two weeks before your exam date. If you started studying from an older guide, compare the outline you used with the current one before you book. The Databricks exam guide is the final authority on weightings and topics.

A timeline example

WhenWhat happens
Month 0You pass; the badge arrives after Databricks reviews the proctor recording
Month 1You add the expiry date to your calendar
Month 18You read the current exam guide and compare it with your notes
Month 20You book the renewal exam, leaving room for a 14-day retake wait
Month 21You sit the exam; if you pass, a new two-year period starts
Month 24The original credential would have expired

The month numbers are our planning example, not a Databricks schedule.

Next step

If you are planning a first attempt, start with the study plan and check the overview for the seven domains. When you want a timed check before a first attempt or a renewal, the Databricks Spark Associate practice tests give you five original practice sets.
