The short version
It is an associate-level exam, but it is not a gentle one. It is hard if you have only read about Spark, and manageable if you write PySpark regularly. Nobody publishes a pass rate for it, so we cannot give you one. What we can say is where the difficulty comes from and how to measure yourself.
What makes it harder than it looks
No documentation. Databricks says no test aids are provided, including API documentation. You have to remember method names, argument forms, and the main defaults. Recognizing a method is not enough when four options differ by one argument.
Look-alike answers. Many questions pit calls that seem interchangeable: `union` and `unionByName`, `distinct` and `dropDuplicates`, `coalesce` and `repartition`, `cache` and `persist`. The question hinges on the one difference.
Code reading under time pressure. You have 90 minutes for 45 questions, about two minutes each. A snippet of eight lines with a twist takes real attention. If you slow down on every code question, the clock gets tight.
Breadth. The outline spans seven domains, from garbage collection to watermarks to the pandas API on Spark. The three smaller domains add up to 20% of the exam, and you cannot skip them.
Moving targets. The outline mentions Structured Streaming, Spark Connect, and the pandas API on Spark. Study material written for older versions of the exam may leave these out. Check the date on any resource you use against the Databricks exam guide, which covers the live version as of October 8, 2026.
Who finds it easier
- Developers who use PySpark DataFrames every week and have read a Spark UI before.
- People who have already taken a Databricks Academy Spark course and practiced afterward.
- Engineers who know SQL well, since a whole domain and much of the DataFrame work map to SQL ideas.
Who finds it harder
- Analysts who know pandas and SQL but have never run a distributed job. The ideas of partitions, shuffles, and lazy evaluation are new.
- Candidates who only watched videos and never typed the code.
- Scala users. The exam uses Python, so you must translate what you know.
- Anyone with no streaming experience, because the streaming rules (output modes, watermarks, state) are unfamiliar.
Common reasons people fail
- Too little hands-on time. Databricks recommends six months of hands-on experience for a reason. Reading does not build the instinct for what a snippet returns.
- Skipping the small domains. Streaming, Connect, and pandas on Spark are 20% together.
- Memorizing definitions without behavior. Knowing that a shuffle is expensive is not the same as knowing which operations cause one.
- Fixing symptoms in tuning questions. The wrong answer often fixes the visible problem (add memory), while the right one fixes the cause (a skewed key).
- Poor time use. Spending five minutes on one question leaves less time for the later ones.
How to judge your readiness
Databricks does not publish the passing score, so a percentage on a practice test cannot promise a result. Use these checks instead:
- You score consistently above your target on full 45-question timed sets, not once but across several attempts. Set the target well above what you think a pass needs.
- Your score is balanced. No domain is far behind the others.
- You can explain, without notes, why each wrong option in a question you missed is wrong.
- You can write the core calls from memory: reading with a schema, a join, a window aggregation, a partitioned write, a simple streaming query.
- You finish a timed set with a few minutes spare.
If the scores wobble or one domain lags, delay the booking by a week or two. The 14-day wait between attempts and the fee for each one make a second try more costly than a short delay.
Is it worth it?
That depends on your goals. It shows that you can handle core Spark work in Python, and Databricks says the certification is valid for two years. It does not replace project experience.
