The short version
If you do not pass the Databricks Machine Learning Associate exam, you can register again after 14 days, and Databricks sets no limit on attempts. If you do pass, the credential is valid for two years. To keep it, you take the full exam that is live at that time. Everything here comes from the Databricks certification page, its certification FAQ, and the exam guide, all read on October 22, 2026.
Retakes: the exact rules
Databricks publishes one retake policy for its exams, and this exam falls under it.
- You wait 14 days between attempts.
- There is no stated cap on the number of attempts.
- Every attempt is charged at the same price as the first one. We do not print prices here because they change.
- Databricks does not issue free retakes or retake vouchers.
- Trying to get around the waiting period, for example by registering again under another name or email address, is prohibited.
The 14 days start from the earlier attempt, so you can book the next date as soon as you are eligible. Databricks does not say that the wait grows after repeated failures. The pages we read mention one fixed period, so any “escalating wait” you see on forums is not a vendor rule.
Use the wait as a study break with a purpose. The vendor pages we read do not describe a detailed score report, so make your own: list the topics that felt slow, and work on those instead of rereading the whole outline. Our exam format page covers timing and results, and the study plan shows how to rebuild a week around weak sections.
How long the credential lasts
A Databricks certification is valid for two years from the date it is awarded. Databricks says it notifies you before the credential expires. The exam guide repeats the rule: recertification is required every two years to keep the credential active.
The credential itself is a digital badge. After a pass, Databricks reviews the proctor recording first. Then it posts the badge and emails you a shareable version.
How renewal works
There is no shortcut. Databricks states that to recertify, you take the current live exam, which is the full exam again. It is not a short update test, and the vendor does not publish a free or discounted renewal route for this exam. The certification list does show a renewal exam for a different credential (Data Engineer Associate), but none for Machine Learning Associate, so do not assume one exists.
A renewal attempt follows the same rules as any other:
- You pay the registration fee again.
- The 14-day retake wait applies if you fail the renewal attempt.
- The exam you sit may differ from the one you first passed, because the live version can change.
Databricks does not describe a grace period after expiry, and it does not say what happens to a lapsed credential beyond the validity rule. If yours is about to lapse, the safe plan is to book the exam well before the end date, and leave room for one retake.
When the exam version changes
Databricks keeps one live version of each exam. The exam guide is its source of truth for what the live version covers, and Databricks says the guide is updated whenever the exam changes, including when the change takes effect. It also asks you to check the guide two weeks before your exam date.
Here is a detail worth knowing. The current guide file for this exam carries an August 2026 label in its file name, but the update table inside it still lists March 1, 2025 for both the publication and the last update. We found no change notice on the certification page. The outline of four sections (38%, 19%, 31%, 12%) is therefore the same as before. Always compare the guide on the day you book, because a new version is announced there.
For retirements, Databricks gives one example in its FAQ: two older exams were deprecated on August 22, 2022. It says credentials already issued for one of them stayed valid for the standard validity period. The FAQ does not state a rule for retake or recertification rights in other cases, so we cannot promise one.
A timeline example
Say you pass on March 10, 2027.
- The credential runs for two years, so it lapses around March 2029. Your account shows the exact date.
- A few months before that, you check the exam guide to see which version is live.
- You book a slot early enough to leave a second attempt before the deadline.
- You pass the then-current exam, and a new two-year period starts.
If you fail at step 4, you wait 14 days, then register again and pay the fee again.
