The short version
There are no required prerequisites. Databricks does recommend that you attend related training and have about six months of hands-on experience with the tasks in the exam outline. You should also be comfortable with Python and a major machine learning library. This page follows the exam guide live as of March 1, 2025 and the certification page, read on October 18, 2026.
What Databricks says
The exam guide says no prerequisite is required, and that course attendance and six months of hands-on experience performing the tasks in the exam outline are highly recommended. It also lists recommended preparation:
- Instructor-led: Machine Learning with Databricks.
- Self-paced, in Databricks Academy: Data Preparation for Machine Learning, Machine Learning Model Development, Machine Learning Model Deployment, and Machine Learning Ops.
In our own view, working knowledge of Python and a machine learning library such as scikit-learn or SparkML, and of Unity Catalog, also helps. That is our suggestion, not part of the vendor’s list. You can read the full list on the Databricks exam guide (PDF).
Required versus recommended
| Required | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier certification | No | None named by the vendor |
| Training course | No | Yes, strongly |
| Hands-on experience | No | About six months with the outline tasks |
| Python | Not formally | Working knowledge, since all ML code is in Python |
| SQL | Not formally | Helpful, since some non-ML code may be in SQL |
“Not formally required” does not mean “not needed.” You cannot read the exam questions without Python, and you cannot answer many of them without having used the platform.
Suggested earlier certifications
The vendor does not name any earlier certification as a prerequisite or a suggested step. If you have no Databricks background at all, the Academy courses are the route the vendor points to.
Skills self-check
Tick what you can do today without looking it up. Be honest.
Python and machine learning
- Read a short Python snippet that builds a pipeline and say what it does.
- Explain overfitting, the bias-variance trade-off, and why we hold out validation data.
- Tell precision from recall, and say when RMSE and MAE differ.
- Explain what one-hot encoding does and when it is a poor choice.
- Explain why you would use cross-validation, and what it costs.
Spark and data
- Read a Spark DataFrame, compute summary statistics, and filter outliers.
- Explain the difference between an estimator and a transformer.
- Fill missing values with the mean, median, or mode and say which fits which column.
Databricks platform
- Describe what an ML runtime adds over the standard one.
- Say what AutoML does for you and what it does not.
- Create a feature table in Unity Catalog and write to it.
- Log metrics and a model in an MLflow run and find the best run.
- Register a model in Unity Catalog and set an alias.
- Explain batch, real-time, and streaming inference and pick one for a scenario.
If you ticked fewer than half, spend your first weeks on the gaps before taking practice exams. If you ticked most, go straight to a baseline test and let it show the rest.
What to learn first if you are brand new
- Python basics and pandas. Variables, functions, DataFrames.
- Machine learning foundations. Supervised learning, train and test splits, overfitting, and the common metrics.
- Spark and Delta on Databricks. How a DataFrame works and how tables are stored.
- Unity Catalog basics. Catalogs, schemas, tables, and why governance matters.
- MLflow. Runs, metrics, artifacts, models.
- The exam outline. Only then walk through the four sections.
Access and language
You need a workspace to practice, and the vendor says hands-on work matters. The exam is offered in English, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), and Korean. Check the Databricks certification page for the current list and delivery options.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need another Databricks certification first?
No. The vendor names no earlier certification as a prerequisite.
Is a degree needed?
The vendor does not ask for one. Practical skill is what the exam measures.
Do I need to attend a course?
No, but the vendor highly recommends it. The self-paced courses in Databricks Academy are listed in the exam guide.
