CS0-004 Study Plan: 4-Week and 8-Week

The short version

Pick the 4-week plan if you already work in a SOC or in vulnerability management and can study 10 to 12 hours a week. Pick the 8-week plan if you are coming from general IT or from Security+ and can give 5 to 7 hours a week. Both plans follow the domain weights: Security Operations 34%, Vulnerability Management 26%, Incident Response and Management 24%, Reporting and Communication 16%. These are ranges, not promises; your own pace will vary.

Before you start

  1. Download CompTIA’s CS0-004 exam objectives (version 2.0). It is your checklist. The tools and terms listed there are the topics.
  2. Set up a small lab if you can: a Linux VM, Wireshark, Nmap, and a free scanner such as OpenVAS or Nuclei. Running a tool once teaches more than reading about it three times.
  3. Keep one notes file per domain, with a “confusions” list for pairs you mix up (SAST and DAST, containment and eradication, credentialed and agentless scans).

How to use practice exams

Take a first set cold in week 1 as a baseline, and do not worry about the score. Then use sets as checkpoints, not as the main way to learn. After each set, read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right, and tag each miss with a domain. Retake a set only after a few days, so you measure knowledge rather than memory.

The 4-week plan (about 10 to 12 hours a week)

Week 1: Security Operations, part 1.

  • Baseline practice set.
  • Objectives 1.1 to 1.3: logging, architecture concepts (Zero Trust, SASE, IAM), indicators of malicious activity, and the analyst tools.
  • Lab: filter a packet capture in Wireshark, write a small YARA rule, decode a string in CyberChef.

Week 2: Security Operations, part 2 and Vulnerability Management.

  • Objectives 1.4 to 1.6: threat intelligence, hunting, automation, and AI in security operations.
  • Objectives 2.1 to 2.4: scan types, tool output, prioritization with CVSS and EPSS, controls and risk.
  • Checkpoint: a practice set, then fix the weakest domain.

Week 3: Incident Response and Reporting.

  • Objectives 3.1 to 3.3: attack frameworks, the incident response phases, evidence handling.
  • Objectives 4.1 and 4.2: reports, inhibitors to remediation, metrics.
  • Write a one-page incident summary for a non-technical reader, as practice.

Week 4: Review and simulation.

  • Two full practice sets in one sitting each, with a day between.
  • Spend the remaining time on the domains with the lowest scores, not on the ones you like.
  • Follow the last-3-days list below.

The 8-week plan (about 5 to 7 hours a week)

WeekFocusObjectives
1Baseline set, logging and architecture concepts1.1
2Indicators of malicious activity, social engineering, identity indicators1.2
3Analyst tools and file formats, scripting basics1.3
4Threat intelligence, hunting, automation, AI in security operations; checkpoint set1.4 to 1.6
5Scanning methods and tool output, prioritization2.1 to 2.3
6Controls, risk, application security; frameworks and the incident response process2.4, 3.1, 3.2
7Incident response techniques, reporting and metrics; checkpoint set3.3, 4.1, 4.2
8Full-length sets, targeted review, restall

In weeks 2 and 3, spend at least one session per week in the lab. In weeks 5 and 6, run an actual scan against a machine you own, then read the output line by line.

Hours: a realistic range

People with daily SOC experience often need 30 to 60 hours. People moving over from general IT or from Security+ often need 80 to 120 hours. These are rough ranges, not CompTIA figures. If your practice scores are not rising, adding hours helps less than changing how you study, for instance by switching from reading to lab work and explanation review.

What to do in the last 3 days

  • Three days out: one last full practice set, timed. Review only the misses, by domain.
  • Two days out: re-read your confusions list and the tool list from the objectives. Skim, do not cram new topics.
  • The day before: a short review at most, then rest. Check your appointment time, your ID, and, for online delivery, your room and system setup.
  • Exam day: read each question’s instruction line first (how many answers). Flag long performance-based items and come back.

Next step

When your plan is set, the domains explained page shows what to focus on within each domain. For timed checkpoints, our CS0-004 practice tests offer five original sets that grow harder from set to set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pass with 4 weeks of study?

Some people do, usually those who already use these tools daily. It depends on your starting point, and no plan guarantees a result.

Should I read the whole objectives document?

Yes, once, early. It is short, and it tells you exactly which tools and terms are in scope.

How many practice sets should I do?

Enough to see consistent scores above your target across different sets, plus the review time. Quality of review matters more than the count.
