The short version
On the pages we checked, CompTIA lists no required prerequisite for CS0-004. It recommends about four years of hands-on experience as a level 2 SOC analyst or a vulnerability analyst. You can book the exam without that history, but you should expect to cover the gap with study and lab work. Check CompTIA’s V4 page for current wording.
Required versus recommended
Required. No required certification or course is listed on the CompTIA CySA+ V4 page or in the exam objectives. The exam does need a payment, an account for scheduling, and acceptable ID on test day.
Recommended. The objectives say the exam is equivalent to roughly four years of hands-on experience in a SOC analyst (level 2) or vulnerability analyst role. That is not a hard gate. It tells you the level of the questions.
Certifications that help
CompTIA does not require another certification first. Security+ and Network+ are commonly taken before CySA+, and they cover ground that CySA+ assumes: networking basics, common attacks, and security controls. Treat that as general advice, not as a vendor rule.
What to know before you start
Before you open the objectives, you should already be comfortable with:
- IP addressing, ports, and common protocols (DNS, HTTP, SMTP, SSH, SMB).
- How operating systems work: processes, services, file locations, and logs on Windows and Linux.
- The basics of encryption, authentication, and authorization.
- Common attack types: phishing, malware, privilege escalation, lateral movement, data exfiltration.
- A little scripting, enough to read Python, PowerShell, or shell commands.
- What a cloud account is, and what a virtual machine and a container are.
If a few of these are shaky, spend a week on them first. It will save time later.
Skills self-check
Answer these honestly. A “no” shows where to start.
- Can you explain the difference between a log, an alert, and an incident?
- Can you tell what a firewall log line is saying about source, destination, and action?
- Can you read a short PowerShell or shell command and say what it does?
- Have you run Nmap or another scanner, and read its output?
- Can you explain why a High CVSS score does not always mean fix it first?
- Can you name the phases of incident response in order?
- Can you describe what “chain of custody” means and why it matters?
- Can you explain to a manager, in two sentences, what happened in a security incident?
Four or more “no” answers mean you should plan for the 8-week schedule in the study plan.
Tools and lab setup
You do not need an expensive lab. A laptop with a virtual machine tool, a Linux VM, Wireshark, Nmap, and one free scanner covers a lot. Read through the tool names in the objectives, and for each one make sure you can say what job it does. Hands-on time with a few matters more than a quick look at all of them.
What you do not need
- Programming skill beyond reading simple scripts.
- Years of management experience.
- A specific vendor product. The tools in the objectives are examples of categories.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Security+ first?
No required certification is listed. Security+ knowledge helps, and many candidates take it first.
Can I take the exam without a job in a SOC?
You can book it. Plan extra lab hours to make up for the missing day-to-day exposure.
Does CySA+ have a minimum age or a degree requirement?
We did not find one on the pages we checked. Check CompTIA’s policies if it matters for you.
