CS0-004 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

A CySA+ credential expires three years after you earn it. You can renew it by collecting 60 continuing education units (CEUs), by finishing CompTIA’s CertMaster CE training, or by passing a qualifying exam. If you do not renew, the only way back is to pass the current exam again. If you fail CS0-004, you may try a second time right away, but a third attempt needs a 14-day wait.

This page goes deeper than the retake paragraph on the exam format page. It covers the whole life of the credential, from the first attempt to the next renewal.

Does CySA+ expire?

Yes. CompTIA’s renewal policy says certifications are valid for three years from the certification date. The clock starts on the day you pass, not on the day you book or the day you receive a certificate.

Renewing does not mean taking the same exam again. CompTIA’s candidate agreement states that you cannot retake an exam you already passed under the same exam code without CompTIA’s prior consent. If you ever want to recertify by exam, you wait until a new version of the series appears.

Ways to renew

CompTIA’s CySA+ page names three families of options.

Training. Complete a qualifying CertMaster CE course online. No exam is involved. The CE page calls this a single-activity route.

Exams. Pass a recertification exam, earn a qualifying higher-level IT industry or CompTIA certification, or pass the latest CySA+ exam.

Activities. Collect 60 CEUs. For CySA+, 60 is the number CompTIA lists. Qualifying activities include:

  • Other IT industry certifications.
  • Training and higher education.
  • IT industry participation.
  • Publishing a relevant article, white paper, blog post, or book.
  • Related work experience.

Three rules matter if you take the CEU route:

  1. Every activity must fall inside your three-year cycle.
  2. Activities need documentation, so keep your records as you go.
  3. At least half of the course content must relate to the objectives of the certification you are renewing, and CompTIA makes the final call on whether an activity counts.

CompTIA also offers an assessment tool on its CE pages that tells you whether a planned activity qualifies. Use it before you spend time or money on a course.

What the pages do not say: they do not explain exactly how a higher-level certification affects a lower one, beyond listing it as a renewal option that earns full CEUs. If you plan to renew that way, confirm the current rule with CompTIA first. Fees for the CE program exist, but we do not print amounts here; check CompTIA.

What happens if you let it lapse

CompTIA’s FAQ is blunt: if you do not renew, the certification expires, and the only way to get it back is to pass the certification exam again. The renewal policy adds that you would need to pass the latest exam version.

There is one small cushion. CompTIA describes a 30-day grace period after expiration. It lets you pay outstanding CE fees and submit CEUs that you earned inside the original three-year cycle. It is not extra time to earn new CEUs. CompTIA’s help center also says that earning another certification or finishing CertMaster CE during the grace period will not renew a certification that has already expired. The policy page does not say exactly when the 30 days start, so do not plan to use them.

Retake rules for CS0-004

From the candidate agreement:

  • No waiting period between your first and second attempt.
  • At least 14 calendar days after your last attempt before a third attempt or later.
  • You pay the exam price for each attempt. CompTIA says it offers no free re-tests or discounts on retakes.
  • A retake that breaks the policy can invalidate the result and lead to a suspension.

The agreement points to separate retake and voucher terms. If you bought a voucher, read those terms, because the pages we checked do not describe them.

When the exam changes: CS0-003 and CS0-004

CompTIA’s CySA+ page lists the older version as retiring on these dates:

ItemRetirement date
English learning productsNovember 22, 2026
English examDecember 22, 2026
TranslationsMarch 23, 2027

CS0-004 launched on June 23, 2026. If you are still studying for the older exam, those dates are your deadline. If you are starting today, prepare for CS0-004. The pages we read do not say what changes for people who already hold the older version, other than that every certification expires three years after its own certification date.

A timeline example

This is an invented example, only to show the rules.

  • Month 0: you take CS0-004 and fail. You may book again the next day.
  • Month 0, second try: you fail again. Your third attempt must be at least 14 calendar days after this one.
  • Month 2: you pass. Your three-year cycle starts now.
  • Months 2 to 38: you earn CEUs, keeping documents for each activity.
  • Month 38: your credential would expire. A 30-day grace period lets you pay outstanding fees and submit CEUs from the original cycle.
  • If nothing is submitted, you must pass the latest exam to hold CySA+ again.

A practical habit

Put your expiration date in your calendar the day you pass, with a reminder a year earlier. Add each qualifying activity to a simple list as you finish it. Renewal then becomes paperwork, not panic.

Next step

If you are planning your first attempt, the study plan and the exam format help you aim for a pass the first time, so retake rules stay theory. When you want a baseline, try our CS0-004 practice tests. Back to the CS0-004 overview. For the final word on renewal, use the CompTIA CySA+ page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I retake CS0-004 the next day?

After a first failed attempt, CompTIA requires no waiting period before the second. Before the third and later attempts, you must wait at least 14 calendar days.

Do I have to renew?

Only if you want to keep the credential active. After three years it expires.

Can I renew by passing CS0-004 again?

No. CompTIA does not allow a retake of a passed exam code without its consent. Passing the latest CySA+ exam is listed as a renewal route when a new version exists.
