SC-300 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

Yes, the credential expires. The Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate credential has a renewal frequency of 12 months, and you renew it by passing a free, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second try and 14 days between later tries, with a limit of five attempts in 12 months. Everything here comes from Microsoft Learn pages checked on October 22, 2026.

Does SC-300 expire?

Microsoft says role-based credentials expire unless they are renewed, and the certification page for this credential lists a renewal frequency of 12 months. Fundamentals credentials do not expire, but SC-300 is an associate-level credential, so it does.

Microsoft’s stated reason is simple: technology changes, and a yearly check keeps the credential tied to current skills. Renewal is a separate, lighter step than the exam.

How renewal works

Here is the process as Microsoft describes it.

  1. Wait for the window. The renewal assessment opens six months before your expiration date. Microsoft says you cannot take it earlier. Expiration dates and times are in UTC.
  2. Find the Renew button. Sign in to your Microsoft Learn profile, open Certifications, and look for the Renew button. If you agreed to Microsoft’s communication terms and have an email on your profile, you also get a reminder when you become eligible.
  3. Prepare if you want to. Microsoft links free learning modules from your certification’s renewal page. They focus on recent updates.
  4. Pass the assessment. It is free, online, unproctored, and open book. Microsoft says it takes about 45 minutes and covers recent technology and industry updates, which is why it is shorter than the exam.
  5. Check the result. After a pass, the new expiration date shows on your Learn profile right away. The certification is extended by one year from the old expiration date, not from the day you passed.

That last point matters. Passing early does not cost you time, because the extra year is added to the existing expiration date.

Renewal assessment retakes

The renewal assessment has no attempt limit. If you do not pass, you can try again immediately. After the second try, you wait at least 24 hours between attempts. The only deadline is your expiration date, so Microsoft recommends starting well before it, in case of illness, technical problems, or several retries.

Microsoft also says there is no other way to renew. Passing a beta exam or retaking the exam does not renew the credential, and it states there are no exceptions.

What happens if it lapses

If the certification expires, Microsoft says you must earn it again by passing the required exam. There is no grace period or late renewal described on the pages we checked. Because the window is six months long and the assessment can be retried freely, a lapse usually means the window was missed, not that the assessment was too hard.

The retake policy has a related rule: you cannot retake an exam you have already passed unless your certification has expired. So the exam only becomes available to you again after a lapse.

Retakes of the SC-300 exam

If you do not pass the exam, Microsoft’s retake policy says:

AttemptWhat you must do
After the first failed attemptWait 24 hours
After each later failed attempt (up to 5 in total)Wait 14 days
After five failed attemptsWait until 12 months have passed since your first attempt
After a passYou cannot retake it unless your certification has expired

You pay for each retake where a fee applies. We do not print prices, and Microsoft lists the fee by country or region when you schedule.

Microsoft will waive the waiting period only if you had an internet connection problem or equipment failure during the exam and Pearson VUE opened a case. You must include the case number in your request. No other reason qualifies.

If the exam or its version changes

Microsoft updated the English version of SC-300 on October 28, 2026. Its change log marks the user authentication, Global Secure Access, and privileged access areas as minor changes, and the other areas as no change. That is an update to the same exam, not a new credential. Microsoft adds that localized versions usually follow about eight weeks later, and that renewal assessments are updated in line with exam updates.

A retired credential is a different story. Microsoft’s renewal FAQ says that when a certification is retiring, it may suppress renewal reminders and shorten the renewal window for some people, and that the “renew by” date will respect the retirement date. As a real example, Microsoft’s page for the old AZ-500 credential says the certification, exam, and renewal assessments retired on August 31, 2026, and that you can no longer earn or renew it. We found no retirement notice for SC-300.

A sample timeline

This is an illustration, not a prediction. Check your own dates in your Microsoft Learn profile.

  • November 10, 2026: you pass the exam, and a 12-month cycle starts (we assume the cycle counts from the pass date).
  • About May 2027: the six-month renewal window opens.
  • June 2027: you pass the renewal assessment on the first try. The credential now runs one year past the original expiration date.
  • November 2027: the original 12 months would have ended here. Instead, the new date is November 2028.
  • The next year: the cycle repeats, with a new window opening six months before the new date.

If you failed the exam on your first try, the timeline starts at the date you finally pass, not at your first attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew before the six-month window opens?

No. Microsoft says the renewal assessment only becomes available once you are eligible, six months before expiration.

Does the renewal assessment cost anything?

No. Microsoft states that renewal is free for valid associate, specialty, and expert certifications.

Do I have to retake the full SC-300 exam to renew?

No. You pass the shorter online assessment instead. You only take the full exam again if the credential has expired.
