The short version
The Security Operations Analyst Associate credential that SC-200 leads to expires after 12 months. You keep it by passing a free, unproctored online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, not by retaking SC-200. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second try and 14 days before each later try. Everything here comes from Microsoft Learn pages checked on October 22, 2026. Those pages win if anything changes.
Does the credential expire?
Yes. Microsoft lists the renewal frequency of this certification as 12 months. Its expiration policy says role-based (associate and expert) certifications are valid for one year from the date you complete all requirements to earn them. Fundamentals certifications do not expire, but SC-200 is an associate-level exam, so it does.
How renewal works
The renewal path is deliberately light.
- It is free. Microsoft states there is no cost to renew.
- It happens on Microsoft Learn. You sign in to your Learn profile, open Certifications, and look for the Renew button next to the credential.
- It is unproctored and open book. You do not go to a test center or book a proctor.
- It is short. Microsoft says renewal assessments take about 45 minutes and focus on recent updates to the technology, so they are shorter than the original exam.
- The window is six months. You cannot renew earlier than six months before the expiration date. Expiration dates and times are in UTC.
- Passing extends the credential by one year from the expiration date. It is not one year from the day you pass, so renewing early does not cost you time.
Microsoft says the only way to renew is to pass the renewal assessment before the credential expires. Retaking SC-200 early or passing a beta exam does not count as a renewal, and Microsoft says there are no exceptions. It also recommends renewing well before the deadline so a technical problem or a few failed tries cannot push you past it.
If you gave Microsoft your email address and agreed to its communication terms, you receive an email when the credential becomes eligible for renewal.
What happens if you fail a renewal assessment
You can try again. Microsoft says renewal assessment retakes have no limit: you can retry immediately after the first fail, and after the second try you wait at least 24 hours between attempts. The only condition is that you pass before the credential expires.
What happens if it lapses
Microsoft’s expiration policy is direct. After the credential expires, you can no longer renew it. You must earn it again by passing the required exam, which for this credential means taking SC-200 again as a new attempt. A passed exam normally cannot be retaken, but Microsoft’s retake policy makes an exception when the certification has expired.
Retake rules for the SC-200 exam
These apply when you sit the full exam and do not pass.
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| After the first failed attempt | Wait 24 hours |
| Between all later attempts, up to five | Wait 14 days |
| Limit | No more than five attempts in 12 months, counted from your first attempt |
| After five failed attempts | You can try again 12 months after the date of your first attempt |
| Exam already passed | You cannot retake it unless the credential has expired |
| Fees | You pay for each retake, where fees apply |
Microsoft allows a waiver of the waiting period only if an internet or equipment failure during the exam produced a Pearson VUE case. You must include that case number in your request. Other reasons do not qualify.
What if the exam changes or retires?
Two different things can happen, and they are easy to mix up.
The exam is updated. Microsoft updates exams on a schedule. The English version of SC-200 was updated on October 21, 2026, and Microsoft says other languages follow about eight weeks later. An update does not cancel your credential. It changes what a new candidate is tested on, and renewal assessments are updated in step with the exam, so a renewal assessment can include the newer topics.
A credential is retired. Microsoft reserves the right to retire exams and certifications at any time. Its policy says a retired credential stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires. Microsoft also says that if a retirement date comes before your expiration date, Learn tells you to renew before the retirement. We found no retirement date for SC-200 on the pages we checked.
A timeline example
This example uses made-up dates to show how the pieces fit.
- You pass SC-200 on March 3, 2027. The credential now runs to March 3, 2028.
- The renewal window opens six months before expiration, around September 3, 2027.
- You pass the renewal assessment on January 20, 2028. The new expiration date is March 3, 2029, one year after the old one.
- Suppose you miss it and the credential expires on March 3, 2028. You can no longer renew it, so you pass SC-200 again to re-earn it.
Plan around it
- Put the window opening date in your calendar when you pass.
- Treat the renewal assessment as a refresher on what changed. Keep lab notes for Defender XDR and Microsoft Sentinel, because those products change often.
- Do not rely on renewing at the last minute.
