The short version
Microsoft does not list a required exam or certification before SC-200 on the pages we checked on October 18, 2026. It does say what a candidate should be familiar with, and that list is long. Treat it as the real prerequisite.
What Microsoft says
The study guide says a candidate should be familiar with Microsoft security, compliance, and identity solutions, Microsoft 365, Azure cloud services, AI agents and Copilots, and Windows, Linux, and mobile operating systems. The role it describes is a security operations analyst who triages alerts, responds to incidents, hunts for threats, and engineers detections, using Defender XDR, Microsoft Sentinel, Entra ID, Purview, and Defender for Cloud workload protections.
Microsoft’s pages we checked do not set a minimum number of years of experience and do not name a required earlier certification.
Required versus recommended
Required by Microsoft: nothing formal.
Recommended in practice:
- Basic Azure skills, such as subscriptions, resource groups, and role assignments.
- Basic Microsoft 365 and Entra ID knowledge: users, groups, sign-in logs, Conditional Access.
- Some time in the Microsoft Defender portal and in a Microsoft Sentinel workspace.
- Working knowledge of Kusto Query Language (KQL).
- Understanding of how attacks unfold: phishing, credential theft, lateral movement, ransomware.
- Windows and Linux basics: processes, event logs, Syslog.
Suggested earlier certifications
Microsoft’s pages we checked do not recommend a specific earlier certification. Many people start with the beginner exam SC-900 to learn the product families, and some with an Azure fundamentals or administrator exam, but that is common advice, not a Microsoft requirement. If you are comfortable with the topics below, you can skip them.
Skills self-check
Answer honestly. Aim to say yes to most items, and treat each no as a study topic.
Concepts
- Can you explain the difference between a SIEM and an XDR platform?
- Can you describe how an alert becomes an incident?
- Do you know the stages of a typical attack, and what MITRE ATT&CK is for?
Microsoft tools
- Have you opened the Microsoft Defender portal and an incident queue?
- Have you seen a Sentinel workspace, a data connector, and an analytics rule?
- Do you know which Microsoft product covers endpoints, email, identities, cloud apps, and cloud workloads?
- Can you name the main Sentinel roles and say what each allows?
KQL
- Can you filter, project columns, and count rows by group?
- Can you join two tables and explain the result?
- Do you know how to find the right table for a question?
Operations
- Can you describe what isolating a device does and what it does not?
- Have you used a playbook or automation rule, or at least read one?
- Can you describe where audit and eDiscovery data come from?
What to learn first if you are new
- Start with the SC-900 skills to learn the product families, if you have not met them.
- Learn Azure and Microsoft 365 basics: tenants, subscriptions, users, groups, and roles.
- Take a KQL course or work through Microsoft’s KQL material, and practice with sample data.
- Set up a trial tenant and a Sentinel workspace and click through the main tasks.
- Only then start the study plan.
Beginners can still pass, but the 8-week plan, not the 4-week one, is the realistic choice.
Accessibility and language
Microsoft says you can request accommodations if you use assistive devices or need extra time, and that you can request an additional 30 minutes if the exam is not available in your language. The exam is offered in 10 languages. Request accommodations before you book.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need SC-900 first?
No. Microsoft does not require it. It helps if the Microsoft security product names are new to you.
Is a degree needed?
Microsoft’s pages we checked do not mention one.
Do I need an Azure account?
Not to book the exam, but a free or trial Azure subscription for a Sentinel workspace makes preparation much easier.
