About these questions
These five questions are original. We wrote them in the style of the PL-300 skills measured as of April 20, 2026, and spread them over the four domains. They are not real exam questions, and the real exam will word things differently and may use other formats.
How to use these
Try each question without looking at your notes or Power BI, and pick an answer before you open the explanation. Then read the explanation even when you were right, because the reason the closest wrong option fails is where the learning is. Note any domain where you slipped and revisit it on the domains explained page, ideally by doing the task in Power BI Desktop.
Question 1 (Prepare the data)
You merge the Tickets query (left) with the Agents query (right) on AgentID. You want a result that contains only the tickets whose AgentID does not exist in Agents, so you can investigate orphaned records. Which join kind should you select?
- A. Left outer
- B. Inner
- C. Left anti
- D. Right anti
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. A left anti join returns only the rows from the left query, Tickets, that have no match in the right query, Agents. That is exactly the set of orphaned tickets. A left outer join, the closest wrong option, keeps every ticket and adds nulls where no agent matches, so you would still have to filter the result yourself. An inner join keeps only tickets that do match, which is the opposite of what you need. A right anti join returns agents without tickets, because it starts from the right query.
Question 2 (Model the data)
You write a measure that uses AVERAGEX to calculate the average sales across every store in the chain. The result must stay the same even when a report slicer filters the Store table. Which expression should you use as the first argument of AVERAGEX?
- A. VALUES(Store)
- B. REMOVEFILTERS(Store)
- C. ALLSELECTED(Store)
- D. ALL(Store)
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. An iterator such as AVERAGEX needs a table as its first argument. ALL(Store) returns every row of the Store table and ignores filters on it, so the slicer has no effect. REMOVEFILTERS is the closest wrong option: it clears filters, but it works only as a CALCULATE modifier and cannot return a table for an iterator. VALUES returns only the stores visible in the current filter context, so the slicer still applies. ALLSELECTED keeps the selection made in the slicer, which is what the scenario wants to avoid.
Question 3 (Model the data)
A book can have several authors, and an author can write many books. The model has Author, Book, and Sale tables, with Sale related to Book. Filtering the report by an author must show sales of that author’s books. Which two actions should you perform? Choose two.
- A. Add a BookAuthor table that is related one-to-many from both Author and Book
- B. Change the relationship between Book and Sale to one-to-one
- C. Use USERELATIONSHIP in every measure to activate an Author relationship
- D. Set the relationship between Book and BookAuthor to filter in both directions
- E. Mark the BookAuthor table as a date table
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answers: A and D. A many-to-many link between two dimensions is resolved with a bridging table that holds one row per author and book pair, related one-to-many from both Author and Book. The filter from an author then flows to the bridge. Book filters the bridge by default, but the bridge does not filter Book, so the relationship between Book and BookAuthor must filter in both directions for the author to reach Book and then Sale. Changing Book and Sale to one-to-one is wrong, because a book has many sales. USERELATIONSHIP needs an existing inactive relationship, and there is none. Marking a date table has nothing to do with bridging.
Question 4 (Visualize and analyze the data)
A DirectQuery report shows a support queue. New tickets arrive at unpredictable moments, sometimes minutes apart and sometimes hours apart. The page should refresh by itself only when new tickets have arrived, not on a timer. What should you configure?
- A. Automatic page refresh with a fixed interval
- B. Scheduled refresh on the semantic model
- C. Automatic page refresh with change detection
- D. Incremental refresh on the Tickets table
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Change detection for automatic page refresh polls a measure, such as the highest ticket ID or the ticket count, and refreshes the page only when the value changes. That matches irregular arrivals. A fixed interval, the closest wrong option, refreshes at set times whether or not anything new has arrived. Scheduled refresh and incremental refresh are about reloading imported data on a schedule. They do not refresh the visuals on a page that someone has open.
Question 5 (Manage and secure Power BI)
You add Marcus to the Sales Managers row-level security role of a semantic model in the Power BI service. He says he still cannot open the report that uses the model. What should you do?
- A. Give him access to the report, for example through a workspace Viewer role, an app audience, or sharing
- B. Republish the semantic model from Power BI Desktop so the new role member is recognized
- C. Install an on-premises data gateway so RLS can be evaluated for him
- D. Give him Build permission on the semantic model
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Membership in an RLS role only decides which rows a person sees once they can open the content. It does not grant access to the report. Access has to be given separately, for example with a workspace role, an app audience, or by sharing. Republishing is the closest wrong option, but role members added in the service take effect without republishing, so it changes nothing here. A gateway connects to on-premises sources and plays no part in evaluating RLS. Build permission allows someone to create new content from the model, and it does not open this report.
