PL-300 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

Yes, the Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential expires. It is valid for one year, and you extend it by passing a free, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiry date. If it lapses, you cannot renew it and must pass PL-300 again. Retakes of the full exam follow separate rules: 24 hours after the first failure, then 14 days between later attempts. The facts here were checked on Microsoft Learn on October 22, 2026.

Does the credential expire?

Microsoft says role-based credentials at the associate and expert level are valid for one year from the day you complete all requirements. For PL-300, the certification page lists a renewal frequency of 12 months. Fundamentals credentials are different: Microsoft says they do not expire, so this page only applies to associate-level and above.

The one-year clock starts when you earn the credential. It does not restart when you take other exams or when you retake PL-300. Only a passed renewal assessment moves the date.

How renewal works

The process is short, and Microsoft describes it in a few points:

  • It is free. There is no fee for the renewal assessment.
  • There is a six-month window. The assessment opens six months before your expiry date, and not earlier. Microsoft recommends taking it well before the deadline, in case of illness, technical problems, or a failed attempt.
  • It is online and unproctored. You take it on Microsoft Learn, without a test center or a proctor, and it is open book.
  • It is shorter than the exam. Microsoft says it focuses on recent updates and takes about 45 minutes.
  • A pass extends the credential by one year from the old expiry date. You do not lose the unused months. If you renew five months early, the new date is still twelve months after the old one.
  • The new date shows at once. Microsoft says your Learn profile updates immediately after you pass.

To start, sign in to your Microsoft Learn profile, open the Certifications section, and look for the Renew button. If your profile has an email address and you agreed to Microsoft’s communication terms, you also get a message when you become eligible.

Renewal content follows the exam. Microsoft says the assessments are updated in step with exam updates and are offered in the same languages as the exam. The learning modules on your renewal page are the suggested way to prepare, so read them before you sit the assessment.

Retaking the renewal assessment

Microsoft sets no limit on attempts. If you fail, you can try again right away. After the second attempt, you must wait at least 24 hours between further tries. The only condition is that you pass before the credential expires, so leave yourself room.

What happens if it lapses?

If the expiry date passes without a pass, the credential has expired. Microsoft’s policy is clear: you can no longer renew it, and you must earn it again by passing the required exam. For this credential that means taking PL-300 again.

Microsoft also states there is no other way to renew. A beta exam or a retake of the regular exam does not extend an active credential. And because the rule that you cannot retake a passed exam has an exception for expired credentials, you only get to sit PL-300 again once the old credential has actually expired.

Retaking the full exam

These rules apply to PL-300 itself, not to the renewal assessment:

SituationRule from Microsoft
After the first failed attemptWait 24 hours
Between later attemptsWait 14 days, up to five attempts
Attempt limitNo more than five tries in 12 months, counted from your first attempt
After five failuresYou can try again 12 months after the first attempt
A passed examCannot be retaken unless the credential has expired
FeesYou pay for each retake, if a fee applies

Microsoft allows a waiver of the waiting period only when you had an internet or equipment failure during the exam and a Pearson VUE case was opened. The waiver request must include that case number. Other reasons do not qualify.

Our exam format page covers the same rules in brief. Here is the detail that matters for planning: the 14-day gap means a failed second attempt is a two-week project, not a next-day one. Use the score report’s bar for each skill area to decide what to rebuild.

What if the exam changes or is retired?

Microsoft updates exams from time to time. It updates the English version first and localized versions about eight weeks later. The PL-300 skills outline you can read today is the one “as of April 20, 2026”, with minor changes in three sub-areas. Because renewal assessments follow exam updates, a renewal you take next year may reflect a newer outline than the one you studied.

Microsoft also reserves the right to retire exams and credentials at any time. If a credential is retired, new candidates can no longer earn it. If it has an expiry date, it stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires. Microsoft adds that renewal reminders are suppressed for retiring credentials, and the renewal window can be shorter for some people, depending on their anniversary date. When a retirement date falls before your expiry date, Learn tells you to renew before the retirement. Nothing we found says PL-300 is being retired; check the certification page for current notices.

A simple timeline

Say you pass PL-300 on March 10, 2027.

  1. March 10, 2027: you earn the credential. It is valid until March 10, 2028.
  2. September 10, 2027: the six-month window opens.
  3. Any day until March 10, 2028: you pass the renewal assessment, for example on January 15, 2028.
  4. New expiry: March 10, 2029, one year after the old date.
  5. If you skip it: on March 10, 2028 the credential lapses, and you would take PL-300 again to re-earn it.

Dates are examples. Your profile shows your real dates, in UTC.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay to renew PL-300?

Microsoft says the renewal assessment is free for anyone with a valid associate, expert, or specialty credential.

Can I renew a year early?

No. The assessment becomes available only in the six months before your expiry date.

Can I take the full exam again instead of renewing?

Not while the credential is active. Microsoft says the only way to renew is the renewal assessment, and a passed exam cannot be retaken unless the credential has expired.
