The short version
AWS lists a validity of three years for the Machine Learning Engineer Associate credential. You can renew it before it expires by passing the latest version of the exam or the Generative AI Developer – Professional exam, or maintain it for one more year in AWS Skill Builder. After a failed attempt you wait 14 calendar days, and the MLA-C02 beta can be taken only once. This page reflects the AWS pages we read on October 22, 2026 and October 29, 2026, and it marks the points AWS does not spell out.
How long the credential lasts
AWS’s certification page gives a validity of 3 years for both MLA-C01 and MLA-C02. The clock matters, because a credential that lapses cannot be renewed or maintained: AWS’s recertification page says the certification must be active to use either route.
The exam guide itself is silent on validity. The number comes from the certification page, so check it there before you plan around it.
Renewing or maintaining
AWS’s recertification page describes two different actions.
| Action | What it adds | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Renew | 3 years | For this credential AWS lists two routes: pass the latest version of the Machine Learning Engineer – Associate exam, or pass the AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional exam. |
| Maintain | 1 year | Complete maintenance activities in AWS Skill Builder. It requires an active credential within 90 days of expiration and an active, paid Skill Builder subscription. |
Two details are easy to miss.
- Time is added from the day you complete the action, not from the old expiration date. Renewing very early therefore wastes some of the old validity.
- The page lists no single deadline for renewing. It gives the 90-day window for maintenance only. AWS says renewal options vary by exam, so check its recertification page for the current list before you plan.
The three options in short: pass the latest Machine Learning Engineer – Associate exam, pass the Generative AI Developer – Professional exam (both renewals), or use AWS Skill Builder to maintain the credential for one more year. The Skill Builder route does not replace an exam in the long run, because it only adds a year. AWS also lists a 50% discount voucher for the renewal exam in your AWS Certification account.
What happens if it lapses
The recertification page does not say what happens after expiration. It only states that the credential must be active to renew or maintain. We will not guess. If your credential has expired or is about to, read the current AWS policy and check your AWS Certification account before you make plans. A safe working assumption is that you would need to take an exam again, but treat that as an assumption.
Retake rules for standard exams
AWS’s after-testing policy page gives these rules.
- Waiting period: 14 calendar days after a failed attempt.
- Attempt limit: none. AWS states there is no limit on exam attempts.
- Fee: every attempt needs the full registration fee. We do not print prices here.
- After a pass: you cannot retake the same exam for two years. If AWS releases the exam with a new exam guide and series code, you can take that new version.
Results usually appear in your AWS Certification account within five business days. For scaled-score exams you can download a PDF score report from the exam history table.
The beta rule
MLA-C02 has been offered as a beta. AWS says beta candidates can take the beta only once and must wait until the exam is generally available to sit it again. An AWS blog from September 2026 gives January 14, 2027 as the date general-availability delivery begins, while the certification page still listed general availability dates as “TBD” on October 27, 2026. Beta registration opened September 1, 2026, and delivery began September 29, 2026.
There is also a wording gap you should know about. The exam guide says its pass or fail designation does not apply to the beta. AWS’s testing policy page says beta candidates are held to the same standard and that those who pass earn the certification. Confirm how results work for your appointment on the AWS pages.
MLA-C01 and MLA-C02: which exam renews which?
The older MLA-C01 was available in English through September 28, 2026. The Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese versions stay available until MLA-C02 reaches general availability. Both versions list the same 3-year validity.
If you hold an MLA-C01 credential, “the latest version” is the exam you would pass to renew. Check which version AWS lists as current when you are inside your renewal window. The content differences are covered in our exam overview and domains explained pages: retrieval augmented generation, embeddings, vector stores, agents, and Amazon Bedrock features are now in scope.
A timeline example
This is an illustration, not an AWS schedule.
- You pass in month 0. The credential runs for 3 years.
- In year 2, you look at the exam guide to see if a new version exists. If one does, compare it with your notes.
- In the last months of validity you book the latest version and prepare.
- If you fail, you wait 14 calendar days and try again, as long as the credential is still active.
- Passing adds 3 years from the date you pass.
Booking leaves room for the 14-day wait. Do not schedule your renewal attempt in the final days of validity.
What AWS does not publish
- A renewal deadline expressed as a date or number of days for this exam.
- What happens after expiration.
- The final duration and question count for the standard MLA-C02. The beta numbers (170 minutes, 85 questions) include unscored items.
- A general availability date on the certification page (it said “TBD” on October 27, 2026; only the September 2026 blog gives January 14, 2027).
