MLA-C02 Prerequisites and Skills Check

The short version

The AWS pages we read name no formal prerequisite, so you do not need another certification to book it. It does describe a target candidate with at least one year of hands-on experience with SageMaker AI, Bedrock, and related ML engineering services, plus a year in a related role. Use the checklist below to see how close you are.

What AWS says

The exam guide for MLA-C02 describes the target candidate this way:

  • At least one year of experience using Amazon SageMaker AI, Amazon Bedrock, and other AWS services for ML engineering.
  • At least one year in a related role such as backend developer, DevOps developer, data engineer, or data scientist.
  • Experience with both traditional ML and generative AI.

AWS’s certification page also mentions a general recommendation of one year in ML engineering or a related role and one year of hands-on AWS experience.

Required versus recommended

Required: nothing formal on the AWS pages we read. They do not say you must pass another exam first, and the guide frames the experience above as a description of the target candidate.

Recommended general IT knowledge (from the guide):

  • Common ML algorithms and their uses.
  • What foundation models can and cannot do.
  • Data engineering basics: formats, ingestion, transformation.
  • Querying and transforming data.
  • Software engineering practice for modular, reusable code.
  • Provisioning and monitoring cloud and on-premises ML resources.
  • CI/CD and infrastructure as code.

Recommended AWS knowledge (from the guide):

  • SageMaker AI capabilities and algorithms, for traditional and generative models.
  • Amazon Bedrock features.
  • AWS storage and data processing services.
  • Deploying applications and infrastructure on AWS.
  • Monitoring and logging tools.
  • AWS services for CI/CD automation.
  • Security best practices: IAM, encryption, and data protection.

Suggested earlier certifications

AWS’s exam guide does not name a required or suggested earlier certification, so we will not claim one. Many people build general AWS familiarity first, but that is general advice and not a rule. If you are new to AWS, the vendor’s own free learning material is a sensible place to begin. See the AWS certification page for the current list.

Skills self-check

Rate yourself honestly. If you can do most of these, you are close to the target.

Data

  • I can explain when to use Parquet instead of CSV.
  • I can describe how streaming data gets from Kinesis into a model pipeline.
  • I know what an embedding is and why a vector store is needed.

Modeling

  • I can tell overfitting from underfitting from a training and validation curve.
  • I know when precision, recall, or AUC is the right metric.
  • I can explain the difference between prompting, RAG, and fine-tuning.

Deployment

  • I can name the endpoint types in SageMaker AI and when each fits.
  • I know what a CI/CD pipeline does for a model and what a model registry stores.
  • I can describe how auto scaling picks its metric.

Operations and security

  • I can explain what model drift is and how I would detect it.
  • I can write a least-privilege IAM policy for a training job.
  • I know which activity is logged by default and which is not.

If you answered “no” to more than half of one group, treat that group as your first study block.

What to learn first if you are new

  1. Basic ML. Supervised and unsupervised learning, training versus validation data, common metrics.
  2. AWS core. IAM, S3, VPC, CloudWatch. These show up in every domain.
  3. SageMaker AI. Training jobs, endpoints, and pipelines.
  4. Amazon Bedrock. Model access, knowledge bases, guardrails, and agents.
  5. Pipelines and security. CI/CD tools, encryption, and logging.

Our how to study page can help you pace this.

Language and accessibility

During the beta the exam is offered in English only. AWS offers a 30-minute extension for non-native English speakers who request it before registering, and other accommodations can be arranged with Pearson VUE. See the exam format page.

Next step

Once you know your gaps, build a schedule with the study plan. When you want to test your recall, our MLA-C02 practice tests are original practice sets.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need another AWS certification first?

No. The AWS pages we read name no required certification for this exam.

Do I need to code?

The guide mentions deploying and hosting models programmatically, so basic Python and familiarity with SDK or CLI use help. You will not write programs during the exam.

Is a degree needed?

AWS does not state a degree requirement in the exam guide.
