The short version
Developers who already build on AWS often need about 40 to 60 hours of focused study. People newer to AWS may need 80 hours or more. Spread that over four to eight weeks and build something small in each domain. Your background changes these numbers a lot, so treat them as a starting point, not a promise.
Before you start
Pick your exam version first. AWS says DVA-C02 can be taken until November 30, 2026, and DVA-C03 delivery begins December 1, 2026. If your exam date falls after that, prepare for DVA-C03. If you book DVA-C02 instead, expect an exam guide with different weightings and without the new AI security task.
AWS published the detailed DVA-C03 exam guide on October 27, 2026. Compare it with this plan. The plan follows AWS’s September 2026 announcement and the DVA-C02 exam guide for the underlying skills.
You need an AWS account for this exam. Reading is not enough. Create a free-tier account, set a budget alert, and delete what you build when you finish a session.
Keep a notes table with one row per service: what it does, when you choose it, and the neighbor you confuse it with. SQS and SNS, user pools and identity pools, Secrets Manager and Parameter Store are classic pairs. Our how to study guide covers note-taking and spacing.
The 4-week plan (about 10 to 14 hours per week)
Week 1: Development, part one. Lambda configuration (memory, timeout, concurrency, layers, destinations, dead-letter queues), API Gateway, and messaging with SQS, SNS, and EventBridge. Write a function triggered by a queue. About 12 hours.
Week 2: Data and security. DynamoDB keys, indexes, queries versus scans, conditional writes, consistency, and caching. Then Cognito, IAM roles, KMS envelope encryption, and Secrets Manager. About 14 hours.
Week 3: Testing, deployment, and AI topics. AWS SAM and CloudFormation, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, deployment strategies, and rollbacks. Add containers with ECR, ECS, and Fargate, plus the AI security and AI-assisted development topics in AWS’s announcement. About 14 hours.
Week 4: Troubleshooting, then review. CloudWatch Logs Insights, custom metrics, X-Ray tracing, and performance tuning. Spend the last half of the week on practice exams and your weakest domain. About 12 hours.
The 8-week plan (about 6 to 8 hours per week)
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Lambda configuration, event sources, error handling, and APIs through API Gateway |
| 2 | Messaging and streaming: SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Kinesis, Amazon Data Firehose |
| 3 | DynamoDB design and access, plus caching and other data stores |
| 4 | Authentication and authorization: Cognito, IAM roles, temporary credentials |
| 5 | Encryption and secrets: KMS, envelope encryption, Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, AI security topics |
| 6 | SAM, CloudFormation, build and deployment services, deployment strategies, containers |
| 7 | Observability and troubleshooting: logs, metrics, traces, throttling, tuning |
| 8 | Full review, timed practice, and weak-spot repair |
How to use practice exams
Take the first practice set early, as a baseline, without studying for it. A low first score is useful because it shows where to spend hours. Then study a domain, take a set, and read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right.
Look at your score per domain after each attempt. Keep a list of the services you mixed up and revisit that list weekly. Late in the plan, take one set in a single sitting at exam pace, about two minutes a question. Practice exams measure readiness. They do not replace AWS’s learning material or time in the console.
Our DVA-C03 practice tests are five sets of 100 original questions each, with domain scores after every attempt.
The last 3 days
- Three days out: Take one full timed set. Review only the questions you missed.
- Two days out: Skim your notes table and the pairs you confuse. Do not start a new service.
- The day before: Stop studying by early evening. Check your ID, booking time, and (for online exams) your room and computer.
- Exam day: Eat, arrive or log in early, and flag long questions to come back to.
Watch the date
If AWS publishes a revised exam guide, it says changes appear on the exam at least one month after the guide. Check the guide again about a week before your exam.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours do I need?
Roughly 40 to 60 hours if you already develop on AWS, and more if you do not. Hands-on practice counts as study time.
Do I need hands-on labs?
Yes. The questions describe real configuration choices, and doing each once makes them far easier to recall.
Is a 4-week plan enough?
It can be, if you already work with Lambda and DynamoDB. If most services are new to you, choose the 8-week plan.
