The short version
DVA-C03 is a moderately hard associate exam. It is not about memorizing definitions. It asks you to pick the right service, setting, or API call for a small problem, often with two plausible answers. Developers who build on AWS every week find it manageable. People who only read about AWS tend to struggle. The AWS pages we checked do not give a pass rate, so treat any figure you see online with caution.
Why it feels hard
- Wide scope. One exam spans Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, messaging, IAM, KMS, CI/CD, containers, and observability.
- Close answers. Distractors are plausible by design. Often a single requirement in the stem, such as lowest operational overhead, decides the answer.
- Length. You answer 65 questions in 130 minutes, and scenario questions can run long.
- Details. Some questions ask for names, such as an API operation, a template property, or a setting.
- New material. DVA-C03 adds AI security, AI-assisted development, and container topics. Study material written for DVA-C02 may miss them.
Why it feels manageable
- The scope is the developer’s job, not architecture design. AWS’s current guide lists designing architectures and VPC networking as out of scope for the target candidate.
- You can pass without a perfect score. You need 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale, and you do not need to pass each domain separately.
- There is no penalty for guessing, and 15 of the 65 questions are unscored.
- The topics repeat. If you know how Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and IAM roles fit together, many questions become variations.
Who usually finds it easier
- Developers with a year or more of hands-on AWS work, which is what AWS recommends.
- People who already use Lambda, DynamoDB, and a CI/CD tool daily.
- People who have passed another AWS associate exam and know the question style.
Who usually finds it harder
- Developers who write code but have rarely used AWS services.
- Cloud or sysadmin professionals who rarely write code. Reading code samples and thinking in SDK calls takes practice.
- Anyone who studied only by watching videos, with no console time.
- Candidates who prepared for DVA-C02 and have not reviewed the new topics.
Common reasons people fail
- Too little hands-on practice. Knowing a setting exists is not the same as knowing when it applies.
- Mixing up neighbors. SQS versus SNS, user pools versus identity pools, canary versus linear.
- Skipping security detail. Security is 26 percent. Cross-account access, key policies, and least privilege show up often.
- Reading the stem too fast. The constraint that decides the answer is easy to miss.
- Poor pacing. Spending five minutes on one question leaves less time for the rest.
- Studying the wrong version. Old DVA-C02 material skips AI security and containers.
How to judge your readiness
Use practice exams, but read the scores honestly. These are rules of thumb:
- Score consistently above your target on several different practice sets, not just one.
- Check each domain. A strong overall score can hide a weak one.
- Explain every answer you got right in your own words. If you guessed, count it as wrong.
- Finish a full set at exam pace without rushing the last questions.
- Build something small in each domain without copying a tutorial line by line.
Our DVA-C03 practice tests show your score per domain after each attempt, which makes the second check easy. Practice sets measure readiness, and they do not replace AWS’s own learning material.
What if you fail?
You wait 14 calendar days, then you can retake. There is no limit on attempts, though each one needs the full registration fee. Your score report may show how you did in each section, which hints at where to focus. AWS cautions that section feedback is general, so read it as a hint.

Frequently asked questions
Is DVA-C03 harder than Cloud Practitioner?
Yes. Cloud Practitioner is a foundational exam about concepts. DVA-C03 expects you to apply services to developer problems.
Can I pass without coding experience?
It is difficult. AWS recommends proficiency in at least one high-level programming language, and many questions assume you can read code.
How long should I study?
Developers with AWS experience often need 40 to 60 hours. Others may need more. Your own practice scores are a better guide than a number.
