The short version
The credential you earn with DP-800 lasts one year. You keep it by passing a free, unproctored renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before it expires, and you can start that assessment six months ahead. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours for the second try and 14 days between later tries, with a cap of five attempts in 12 months.
Does the credential expire?
Yes. Passing DP-800 earns Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate. Microsoft states that role-based associate and expert certifications, and specialty ones, are valid for one year from the day you complete the requirements. Only fundamentals certifications never expire. Microsoft gives the reason in its renewal FAQ: the yearly cycle is meant to keep skills in step with changing technology. For a credential built around fast-moving features such as vector search and external models, that logic is easy to see.
How renewal works
Microsoft describes renewal as a short process on Microsoft Learn:
- Connect your Microsoft Learn profile to your certification profile.
- Open the Certifications section of your profile and look for the Renew button. It appears when you become eligible.
- Refresh your skills with the free learning modules on the renewal page.
- Pass the online assessment before the expiry date.
Key properties of the renewal assessment, as Microsoft publishes them:
- It is free. There is no fee to renew. (This guide does not print exam fees; Microsoft sets them by country.)
- It is unproctored and open book. You take it online, on your own, and you may look things up.
- It is shorter than the exam. It focuses on recent updates. Microsoft says it takes about 45 minutes.
- The window opens six months before expiry. You cannot renew earlier than that. Microsoft recommends not waiting until the last day, so a bad internet day or a failed attempt does not cost you the credential.
- Passing extends the credential by one year from the expiry date. If you renew early, you do not lose the unused months.
- The new date shows up immediately on your Microsoft Learn profile.
- Languages follow the exam. Renewal assessments are offered in the same languages as the matching exam.
Microsoft also says renewal assessments are updated along with the exam. When the English exam changed on October 19, 2026, the renewal content follows the same cadence.
Renewal assessment retakes
The renewal assessment has a much looser retake rule than the exam. Microsoft says there is no limit on attempts. If you fail, you can try again right away. After the second try, you wait at least 24 hours between attempts. The only deadline that matters is the expiry date.
What happens if it lapses?
This is the part to take seriously. Microsoft’s expiration policy says that once a certification has expired, you can no longer renew it. You have to earn it again by passing the exam. The renewal FAQ adds that there is no other route to renew: a beta exam or retaking the exam while the credential is still active does not count. The only way is the renewal assessment.
Also note the reverse rule on the retake page: you cannot retake an exam you have already passed unless your certification has expired. So you cannot sit DP-800 again just to refresh a credential that is still active.
Exam retakes
If you do not pass DP-800, Microsoft’s retake policy applies:
| Attempt | What you must do |
|---|---|
| Second attempt | Wait 24 hours after the first |
| Third to fifth attempt | Wait 14 days between each attempt |
| Limit | No more than five attempts in 12 months from your first attempt |
| After five failures | You become eligible again 12 months after the date of your first attempt |
| Fee | You pay again for each retake, where a fee applies |
A waiver of the waiting time exists only for internet or equipment failure during the exam, and only when a Pearson VUE case was created. You must include the case number in the request. Microsoft states that no other reason qualifies.
Use the waiting time well. The score report breaks your result down per skill area, so it tells you which of the three domains to revisit. It does not list the questions you missed. Rebuild your plan around the weakest domain, then test yourself again with fresh questions.
Retirement and version changes
Microsoft reserves the right to retire exams and certifications at any time. When a credential is retired, new candidates can no longer earn it. It stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires or, if it had no expiry date, for two years after retirement. If a retirement date falls before your expiry date, Microsoft says the renew-by message on Learn takes that into account and tells you to renew before the retirement.
Microsoft shows no retirement date for DP-800 on the pages checked on October 22, 2026. Version changes are separate from retirement. The English skills list was updated on October 19, 2026, with minor changes in four areas. If you booked or passed the exam before that date, your result is still valid. Other languages follow roughly eight weeks after English.
A timeline example
This example is illustrative, not a promise of dates:
- March 3: you pass DP-800. Your credential is valid until the next March 3.
- September 3: the renewal window opens, six months before expiry.
- October: you take the renewal assessment, pass it, and the expiry moves to the following March 3, one year later than before.
- Next September: the window opens again, and the cycle repeats.
If you skip the window and the date passes, you start over with the full exam.

Frequently asked questions
Can I renew early?
Not more than six months before expiry. Once the window is open, you can renew any time before the date.
Does a failed renewal assessment hurt me?
Microsoft sets no attempt limit and no penalty, apart from a 24-hour wait after the second try.
Do I renew by retaking DP-800?
No. Microsoft says renewal happens only through the Learn assessment, and a passed exam cannot be retaken while the credential is active.
