DP-800 Exam Guide: SQL AI Developer

The short version

DP-800 is Microsoft’s associate-level exam for developers who build AI-enabled database solutions on SQL platforms. It mixes classic database development (T-SQL, JSON, security, CI/CD) with newer work: embeddings, vector search, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). This guide uses the study guide that Microsoft lists as “Skills measured as of October 19, 2026”.

What the exam is

The full name is Developing AI-Enabled Database Solutions. Passing it earns the Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate credential, which Microsoft labels as intermediate level. Microsoft describes the platforms in scope as Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric.

This is a developer exam, not a theory exam. The skills list uses verbs like “design”, “implement”, “write”, “configure”, and “create”. Expect to choose the right T-SQL, the right setting, or the right sequence of steps, usually inside a short work scenario. You may also meet interactive components, which Microsoft mentions on the exam page without naming the format.

Two things make DP-800 different from older SQL developer exams. First, a quarter or more of it is about AI in the database: external models, vector data, hybrid search, and calling a language model from T-SQL. Second, it expects modern engineering habits, such as source-controlled database projects, pull requests, and deployment pipelines.

Who it is for

Microsoft says candidates should have subject matter expertise in designing and developing AI-enabled database solutions, experience writing T-SQL and developing databases, and familiarity with CI/CD in GitHub, AI-assisted development tools, and AI concepts such as embeddings, vectors, and models. The typical reader of this page is a database developer, a SQL Server or Azure SQL professional, or an application developer who now owns the data layer. Microsoft lists no formal prerequisite exam. See the prerequisites page for a self-check.

The three domains and their weightings

DomainWeighting
Design and develop database solutions35-40%
Secure, optimize, and deploy database solutions35-40%
Implement AI capabilities in database solutions25-30%

Design and develop database solutions

Tables, indexes, and constraints, specialized tables (in-memory, temporal, external, ledger, graph), JSON columns, sequences, and partitioning. Then views, functions, stored procedures, and triggers, plus advanced T-SQL: CTEs, window functions, JSON and regular-expression functions, fuzzy string matching, and graph queries. It also includes using GitHub Copilot and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers with your database work.

Secure, optimize, and deploy database solutions

Encryption, Dynamic Data Masking, Row-Level Security, permissions, auditing, and passwordless access. Performance work with execution plans, Query Store, isolation levels, and blocking. CI/CD with SQL Database Projects, and integration through Data API builder, Azure Monitor, and change-tracking features such as CDC and change event streaming.

Implement AI capabilities in database solutions

External models, embedding design (which columns, what chunk size, how to keep them fresh), full-text, vector, and hybrid search, ANN versus KNN, reciprocal rank fusion, and RAG built with `sp_invoke_external_rest_endpoint`.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SQL AI Developer Associate credential expire?

Microsoft says associate, expert, and specialty certifications expire annually and can be renewed for free with an online, unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn. Only fundamentals certifications do not expire.

Is DP-800 offered in English only?

No. Microsoft lists 10 languages. Localized versions are updated about eight weeks after the English one.

Do I need to be an AI specialist?

No. You need to understand embeddings, vectors, and models well enough to use them from SQL. You do not need to train models.
