The short version
CompTIA’s SecAI+ page states no formal prerequisite. It does recommend 3 to 4 years of IT experience and 2 or more years of hands-on cybersecurity experience, plus Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, or equivalent knowledge. You can book the exam without any of these, but the recommendation tells you the level the questions assume.
Required versus recommended
| What CompTIA says | |
|---|---|
| Required | Nothing stated on the exam page |
| Recommended experience | 3 to 4 years in IT and 2 or more years of hands-on cybersecurity |
| Recommended certifications | Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, or equivalent knowledge |
The recommended certifications cover different ground. Security+ is the broad security foundation. CySA+ leans toward detection and analysis, and PenTest+ toward testing and attack techniques. You do not need all three. Any one of them, or the equivalent work experience, gives you the security base.
What to know before you start
Security basics. Least privilege, access control, encryption, logging and monitoring, incident response, and risk. These show up in domain 2 and domain 3 all the time, applied to AI.
Networking and cloud basics. APIs, gateways, endpoints, and the idea of running a service in a cloud environment. You do not need a specific cloud provider’s products.
Data basics. Structured and unstructured data, data quality, and why provenance and integrity matter. A little data literacy goes a long way.
Some exposure to AI tools. You should have used a chatbot or a code assistant and written prompts. You do not need to train models or write code to pass, but the vocabulary will stick better if you have seen it in action.
Skills self-check
Rate yourself honestly on each line: comfortable, shaky, or new.
- I can explain least privilege and apply it to a service account.
- I can describe encryption in transit and at rest and why in-use protection is different.
- I know what a gateway or web application firewall does.
- I can read logs and spot an unusual pattern.
- I can explain the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning.
- I know what a prompt is, and what a system prompt does.
- I can say what a language model is and give one way it can be wrong.
- I understand why training data quality affects model behavior.
- I can describe what a risk register is and why risks have owners.
- I have heard of the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, even if I do not know the details.
How to read your result. If most are “comfortable,” go to the study plan and choose the 4-week version. If many are “shaky,” choose the 8-week version. If most are “new,” spend time on Security+-level material first. A few weeks of foundations is cheaper than a failed attempt, because CompTIA’s candidate agreement charges the exam price for every attempt.
Suggested path
- If you are new to security: build a base, for example with Security+ study.
- If you work in security but not with AI: learn the AI vocabulary first (domain 1), then move through the domains in order.
- If you work with AI but not security: concentrate on domains 2 and 3, especially access control, data protection, monitoring, and attack-and-control pairs.
Whichever path you choose, CompTIA’s current exam objectives are the checklist. The domains explained page translates them into plain language.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Security+ first?
CompTIA’s page does not require it. It does list Security+ among recommended certifications, so equivalent knowledge matters.
Can I take SecAI+ as my first certification?
Nothing stops you from booking it. The experience recommendation suggests it is better as a later step.
